Tropical air mass brings severe thunderstorms, flooding to DC region

A tropical air mass is bringing severe storms to parts of the D.C. region with threats of heavy rainfall, high winds and lightning Thursday afternoon.

Here are the watches and warnings currently in effect, according to the National Weather Service:

  • Severe thunderstorm warning for southwestern Carroll County, northwestern Howard County, central Montgomery County and southeastern Frederick County in Maryland, as well as central Loudoun County, Virginia, until 2:45 p.m.
  • Severe thunderstorm warning for northwestern Montgomery County and southwestern Frederick County in Maryland and northeastern Loudoun County, Virginia, until 2:30 p.m.
  • Flash flood warning for south central Frederick County until 5 p.m.
  • Flood watch for D.C. region until 11 p.m.

Severe thunderstorms are dropping buckets of rain, threatening to knock out power or flood some spots.

According to the National Weather Service, a line of severe thunderstorms was spotted in Frederick County was moving east at 25 mph at 2:15 p.m., with 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail in tow.

The D.C. region is under a flood watch from 2 p.m. through late Thursday night. The National Weather Service said urban areas along Interstate 95, which have seen heavy rainfall this week, are at the highest risk.

The chance for storms continues through Thursday evening.

Rainfall rates could hit 2 to 3 inches an hour, according to the NWS.

High winds could blow over trees, potentially knocking out power later in the day.

“Lingering showers and storms will draw to a close this evening, a little bit of patchy fog overnight,” said 7News First Alert Meteorologist Steve Rudin.

Outside of the risk of severe weather, Thursday will be warm with highs around 85 to 90 and high humidity.

Rain chances continue to appear in the forecast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday — though periods of sunshine are expected to break through over the weekend.
