(CNN) — President Donald Trump said Thursday that a new walkway will be built connecting the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, to the Potomac River.
鈥淲e鈥檙e going to call it the promenade,鈥� he told reporters in the Oval Office.
鈥淭hey want to call it the Trump Promenade,鈥� the president said. 鈥淏ut I don鈥檛 know if I want to do that. But it鈥檚 going to be beautiful.鈥�
Trump said the project would revive what he described as the memorial鈥檚 original intended design.
鈥淭he Lincoln Memorial 鈥� the front was supposed to be the back. The back was supposed to be the front. It never got built, because they built two roadways behind it after it was built, and it shut off the gateway to the water,鈥� he said.
鈥淭hat was really going to be the main entry, and we鈥檙e going to be doing that,鈥� the president said, adding that 鈥渨e have a way of beautifully going over those two roads.鈥�
Asked for additional details, the White House referred CNN to Trump鈥檚 comments.
The announcement is just the latest of Trump鈥檚 efforts to renovate Washington, DC. He鈥檚 pushing forward with a controversial overhaul of the Reflecting Pool, which he also touted in the Oval Office on Thursday.
鈥淭he water is pouring in as we speak, and maybe we鈥檒l show what it looks like,鈥� Trump said, directing attention to a laptop on his desk that played footage of the water.
鈥淣ice, clean water,鈥� he added. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 the longest pool anywhere in the world.鈥�
For the second consecutive day, he also displayed a large chart titled 鈥淥ur Pool is Bigger than Skyscrapers鈥� that he used to compare the length of the Reflecting Pool to the heights of iconic buildings, including New York鈥檚 Empire State Building.
Trump鈥檚 attempts to put his imprint on the nation鈥檚 capital suffered a blow on Thursday, however, when the Kennedy Center to begin removing his name from the performing arts center to comply with a recent court order.
