The D.C. region will be hit with a summerlike heat wave starting Monday, with record-breaking temperatures possible every day through Wednesday.
“Get ready for the hottest weather of the year so far,” 7News First Alert Meteorologist Eileen Whelan said, with highs reaching into the mid-90s.
At Reagan National airport, the highest temperature ever recorded on May 18 was 96 degrees in 1877. The standing record at Dulles airport is 91, set in 1987.
Tuesday is projected to be just as hot or hotter.
While Wednesday will mark another extremely hot day as temperatures run into the mid-90s, it will be the last day of scorching conditions. A cold front is expected to bring a wave of scattered showers and strong storms late in the day.
The region will see cooler temperatures and potentially more showers Thursday. Forecasters say the day’s highs will range between 65 and 71 degrees.

Get ready for the hottest weather of the year so far, with record-breaking high temperatures possible. Afternoon high temperatures will soar into the mid-90s, which is nearly 20 degrees above normal for mid-May. The current record at Reagan National is 96 (set in 1877) and 91 (1987) is the standing record at Dulles. A few showers and thunderstorms may bubble up over the northern Shenandoah Valley and Potomac Highlands late this afternoon. D.C. is expected to stay dry.
MONDAY NIGHT:
Mainly clear
Highs: 66-74
Winds: South 5-10 mph
Dry and mild weather is expected overnight with low temperatures likely not dropping below 70 degrees in D.C. The average overnight low for this time of year is 55 degrees, so it will be much warmer than normal.
TUESDAY:
Partly cloudy
Highs: 94-98
Winds: Southwest 10-15 mph
Very hot weather for May continues with high temperatures soaring into the mid-to-upper 90s for the second day in a row. More record-high temperatures are possible for the date. Reagan National’s May 20 record stands at 95 degrees, while Dulles is 93 degrees. It will be breezy and a bit humid with very low storm chances.
WEDNESDAY:
Partly cloudy, evening storms
Highs: 90-95
Winds: Southwest 5-10 mph
The final day of the heat streak will come to an end with an approaching cold front. This will also act as a focal point for scattered showers and strong storms late in the day. Details will continue to be fine-tuned, but ingredients for strong storms already are coming together.
THURSDAY:
Showers
Highs: 65-71
Winds: Northeast 5-10 mph
A welcome break from the heat with noticeably cooler and cloudier conditions and spotty showers possible throughout the day.
