Va. gov. wants to give Dulles a competitive boost

TYSONS CORNER, Va. 鈥 Virginia’s governor wants to give Dulles International Airport a financial shot in the arm to make the airport more competitive and bring in more customers and airlines.

Dulles has seen growth in international travel but the airport has been losing domestic travelers to other airports like Reagan National Airport for years. Gov. Terry McAuliffe wants to turn that around.

鈥淧eople will be excited to know that I am going to put $50 million from our transportation fund for Dulles Airport,鈥 says Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

The funding will be included in the budget he will present on Dec. 17 to state lawmakers, who will craft their own spending plan when the General Assembly convenes in January. The money McAuliffe would invest in Dulles would be spread over two years.

鈥淒ulles Airport is one of Virginia鈥檚 premier economic assets, and this critical investment will make it even stronger,” McAuliffe says.

McAuliffe says the $50 million will help to bring down the cost for airlines to operate at the airport.

鈥淚t鈥檚 very high at Dulles. We need to bring that down to be competitive,鈥 he says.

鈥滲y reducing costs to carriers at Dulles, we can bring more air travel business to the region and take another step forward in our efforts to build a new Virginia economy,” the governor says.
