Lawyers for the 聽man connected to Hannah Graham’s disappearance have requested a gag order in separate criminal investigation involving an attack and rape of a woman in聽Fairfax in聽2005.
Jesse Matthew’s defense team聽wants to ban the media from talking to anyone who is involved with聽the聽Fairfax trial, which is set for 聽March 9. 聽Matthew has already pleaded not guilty to the three charges in the case: attempted capital murder, abduction with the intent to defile and sexual penetration with an object against the victim’s will.
Matthew’s 聽lawyers聽have asked the judge for a gag order and for two-thousand dollars to hire a DNA expert reports .聽 聽A gag order is a聽legal order that bans information or聽comments from being made public or from being given to聽the media.聽 They are also called 鈥減rotective orders.鈥� 聽Judges聽 say they are important to protect a person鈥檚 right to a fair trial.
The case involves聽a woman being聽brutally attacked and raped in September 2005.聽聽Matthew is linked by DNA to that聽rape and also to聽the murder of Morgan Harrington.聽 She vanished in 2009.聽 But Matthew聽has not yet been charged in the Harrington case.Matthew has聽been charged with聽disappearance of聽Hannah Graham, whose remains were found in October not far from where she went missing at the University聽of Virginia聽this summer.
A hearing on the gag order (also known as a protective order) is scheduled for聽January 8 in Fairfax.
