Vigil held for Prince George’s Co. detective killed in gun battle

LANDOVER, Md. — 聽Police officers, family members and neighbors bundled against the chill, held candles and remembered the late Prince George’s County police officer Jacai Colson during a vigil Sunday outside the police station .

“Remember his memory, cherish him,”聽said Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski. “We must never forget, know that we will never forget.”

The crowd observed a moment of silence 聽at 4:30 p.m., 聽the time the 28-year-old聽detective聽lost his life in the chaotic gun battle that ensued when a gunman opened fire outside the District III police station in Landover. 聽Police have determined聽that Colson was .

The family was represented by Barbara Rust, Colson’s 聽grandmother.

“He was what I called ‘my man,’ and he’s in a better place and he’s at peace,” Rust said through sobs.

A private funeral for Colson will be held Friday at First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Colson 聽Monday, March 28 聽at Lawn Croft Cemetery in Linwood, Pennsylvania.
