Pontiff protocol for the faithful

WASHINGTON– Pope Francis’ much-anticipated visit聽to the United States is less than a month away.聽 For those聽lucky enough to get close to the Pontiff, here are some things to keep in mind.

鈥淭his is a special prayerful moment and great moment for the country,鈥 said聽Don Clemmer, a spokesman for the聽U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Clemmer said聽that when addressing the Pope, you should refer to him as 鈥淵our Holiness.鈥

Unless it is a solemn event, the faithful are encouraged to cheer and wave as the Pope mobile goes by.

If Pope Francis walks up, it鈥檚 OK聽to shake his hand or hug him, if allowed. However, running up to the Pope is discouraged.

鈥淚t does alarm him when people run up to him, and that applies to even fully habited nuns,鈥 Clemmer said.

The Pontiff is well aware of the “selfie” craze and has been known in the past to pose for them.

on Sept.聽24,聽but it is expected to be a low-key visit to聽Capitol Hill. He is expected to spend the most time greeting the faithful while attending the World Meeting of Families event in Philadelphia.
