WASHINGTON – Construction could begin later this year on a new park that would serve the Dupont Circle neighborhood.
D.C. Councilman Jack Evans says the council approved $10 million in the city’s fiscal year 2015 budget for the new park, which is expected to span the Connecticut Avenue underpass at Q Street.
“It’s something we’re really excited about and will change the dynamic of the area because it’ll bring together both sides of Connecticut in a pedestrian park,” Evans says.
Neighbors in Dupont Circle have been asking the city for a park between Q Street and the circle for decades, says Area Neighborhood Commission member Michael Feldstein.
“There was a drawing done 20 or 30 years ago of what a park would look like,” he says.
New drawings have been completed. And civil engineers have been hired to determine what is needed to build the park and how much it would cost. The next step in the process is hiring a park planner, Feldstein says.
“My guess would be he would want to meet with the community and get the views of what the park should be,” Feldstein says.
The money becomes available in October. At that point, Evans says, they can break ground on the park.
