Beloved kids’ toy goes gluten-free

WASHINGTON – When “gluten-free” is brought into a conversation it’s usually in reference to cupcakes or special menus at restaurants, but now it’s hitting children’s toy chests.

Wheat is the central ingredient in Hasbro’s signature Play-Doh, as well as off-brand versions of the classic toy. reports several companies are capitalizing on the hypoallergenic niche with gluten-free versions of the clay.

There’s Soy-Yer Dough, Gluten-Free Wonder Dough and Max’s Mud. There are gluten-free versions of fingerpaint and stickers, too.

Celiac disease support groups say children who are allergic to gluten can get rashes and bloodshot eyes by playing with regular Play-Doh.
