NEW YORK (AP) 鈥 Inside the converted Williamsburgh Savings Bank in Brooklyn 鈥 built in the 1870s, now the site of luxurious events held beneath stunning Victorian architecture 鈥 the Rolling Stones kept their fans wanting more.

Earlier Tuesday, the band confirmed that they will release a new titled 鈥淔oreign Tongues,鈥 this summer, and dropped a new single called 鈥淚n The Stars.鈥

Journalists, VIPs and celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, Odessa A鈥檢ion and Lindsey Vonn waited in the echoing hall to witness Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood’s first conversation about the new album.

To celebrate, they invited to host the exclusive announcement event. It was a hilarious choice. 鈥淚 think this is the one, after years of toiling in obscurity,鈥 he joked about 鈥淔oreign Tongues,鈥 minutes before the band joined him on stage. 鈥淭his is their time.鈥

What we know about 鈥楩oreign Tongues鈥 so far

鈥淔oreign Tongues,鈥 recorded over the course of a month in London, will be released July 10.

The Stones’ last album was It was their first album of original material in 18 years 鈥 since 2005鈥檚 It was also their first full-length release since the death of in 2021. He appeared posthumously on two of that album’s 12 tracks.

鈥淔oreign Tongues鈥 will also include a special appearance from Watts, lifted from one of his final recording sessions before his death. 鈥淲e did that in L.A. with Charlie,鈥 said Jagger of the song. 鈥淚t’s real fast, a punk-rocker.鈥

The album will also feature contributions from Steve Winwood, the Cure鈥檚 Robert Smith and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith.

鈥淚 think Paul (McCartney) really wanted to jump in there,鈥 Jagger said at the event. 鈥淭here was no intimidation. He wanted to play with the band.鈥

The Stones also worked with their close collaborators Matt Clifford, drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Darryl Jones as well as Oscar-winning pop producer Andrew Watt (known for his work with and and the Stones’ 鈥淗ackney Diamonds,鈥 to name a few).

When something isn鈥檛 working in studio, the band said Watt is the one who kicks them in to gear. The room erupted into cheers for him 鈥 including his parents, who were seated directly behind him 鈥 and O鈥橞rien compared the 鈥渋mmediacy鈥 of the new album to 鈥淓xile on Main Street.鈥

The band also spent time detailing the record鈥檚 artwork. 鈥淟et鈥檚 reveal the album cover, I call him Mr. Ugly,鈥 said Jagger, before the cover appeared on the screen above their heads. 鈥淗e鈥檚 pained by a famous new artist called Nathaniel Quinn.鈥

Quinn, who was seated in the front row, said it was an amalgamation of the band members鈥 faces and a depiction of their journey.

A taste of ‘Foreign Tongues’

Speculation surrounding a new Stones album has been going around for weeks. First, posters appeared around London with the band name 鈥淭he Cockroaches,鈥 a pseudonym the Stones’ have used in the past, along with a QR code. The code led to and a sign-up page. Once a user had signed up, they received a confirmation message from Universal Music 鈥 the Stones’ label. Representatives did not provide The Associated Press with comment or confirmation at the time.

Eventually it led to a white label, vinyl-only release of the track 鈥淩ough and Twisted鈥 using The Cockroaches name 鈥 the first true tease of 鈥淔oreign Tongues,鈥 decipherable only by their most dedicated fans.

Then, in the week leading up to their announcement, billboards with the band鈥檚 iconic mouth and tongue logo began appearing in major cities around the world with the words 鈥淔oreign Tongues鈥 in various languages: 鈥淔remmede Sprog,鈥 鈥淰reemde Tongen,鈥 鈥淒ayuhang Dila,鈥 鈥滌櫢甑柎,鈥 and 鈥淟angues 脡trang猫res鈥 among them. Around the same time, the Rolling Stones鈥 official website was updated to feature video clips stylized to look like surveillance footage of them in the studio.

On Sunday, the band shared a slide puzzle graphic fans believed to be the album artwork, depicting a cartoonish collage of the members鈥 faces. (They were correct; it was the official album cover.) There was also a short video clip, just 10-seconds long, that appeared to tease a new song.

The story behind 鈥楻ough and Twisted鈥

鈥淚t’s a fantasy about a woman that promises a lot of things and then what happens to you in life, you get involved in these terrible places that she takes you to,鈥 Jagger told The Associated Press. 鈥淚t’s a Blues fantasy, really… it’s fairly amorphous. It’s very much just my unconscious ramblings.”

Wood jumped in and said he used the same guitar he used on Faces’ 1971 track 鈥淪tay With Me鈥 鈥 his project with Rod Stewart 鈥 on 鈥淩ough and Twisted.鈥 鈥淚t was so spontaneous,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e even surprised ourselves with it.鈥

鈥淲hen you get in the studio, and the guys get together, and you lay out a track, an idea, and you let it take off from there 鈥 you can’t plan all of this stuff,鈥 Richards said of their new material. 鈥淵ou kind of just have to follow it and hope you come out the other end.鈥

The Stones’ 鈥楾onight Show鈥 takeover and what comes next

鈥淭he Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon鈥 will host the surviving members of the Stones across three nights this month, NBC announced Tuesday.

Jagger will appear on Wednesday’s show and Fallon will host Richards on Thursday. Wood will appear on May 13.

No additional details on whether the band will perform together on the show were immediately released.

But will fans get to see them perform 鈥淔oreign Tongues鈥 on a new tour? Maybe. 鈥淚 would love to tour the album,鈥 Jagger told AP. 鈥淚 absolutely would love to. I hope to do it as soon as that’s possible.鈥
