The wanted person who fled from police in the downtown Crown area in Gaithersburg, Maryland, on Thursday and later turned himself is now facing charges of rape and assault.

Montgomery County police arrested Twon Kelly, 25, on Thursday after an exhaustive search of the area and served him a warrant.

On Friday, he was charged with second-degree rape and assault of a woman who reported that Kelly sexually assaulted her at a party in Gaithersburg on March 23.

Police swarmed the area as they searched for Kelly, who escaped briefly, Montgomery County police spokeswoman Capt. Stacey Flynn said Thursday.

Police made arrangements with Kelly to turn himself in. Flynn said Kelly was not barricaded and nobody was in danger during the search.

A gun was found under a doormat in the apartment building, where police believed Kelly fled from. Detectives are trying to determine if there was a connection between Kelly and the gun found.

Police believe there is no connection between what happened Thursday and Wednesday’s incident in which police said a gunman fired at officers near Lakeforest Mall.
