WASHINGTON — It was a snowy, icy winter in the D.C. region, including one storm of near-record snowfall.
To recognize those who helped by shoveling sidewalks, Montgomery County Council President Nancy Floreen will present SAFE (Sidewalks Are For Everyone) Golden Shovel Awards to residents who went 鈥渁bove and beyond鈥� in helping clear ice and snow from sidewalks.
Floreen, who chairs the Council鈥檚 Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee, began the Golden Shovel Awards in 2003 to honor residents who helped shovel out neighbors. She’s now asking for nominations for those who stood out this winter.
Nominations must be mailed or e-mailed by March 25. Awards will be presented at a County Council session in Rockville on April 19.
鈥淥ur seniors, school children, people with disabilities and those who walk to work or use mass transit depend on snow-free sidewalks,鈥� Floreen said in a statement. 鈥淭his goes beyond convenience 鈥� it is a matter of public safety. I certainly hope that residents will nominate individuals for a Golden Shovel who put the Golden Rule to work.鈥�
Nominees must be county residents and recommended by another person. Those completing the form need to describe in detail why the candidate should receive an award.
Nominations will be considered based on their humanitarian efforts to clear snow from sidewalks in the County.
