Even though the Loudoun South team fell short of snagging a Little League World Series title, its state and regional victories are nothing to ignore. And even its hometown Major League Baseball team took time to applaud and honor the efforts and accomplishments of the Virginia squad.
Loudoun South spent part of Saturday afternoon taking in a Washington Nationals batting practice.
Members of the team stood on the field at Nats Park, eyes transfixed as the major league players swung at ball after ball, while the coaches encouraged them to observe the batter鈥檚 player techniques.
Between their at bats, Nats players trotted over to the Little League team and signed autographs.
One Loudoun South player said he was enjoying the afternoon.
鈥淚t鈥檚 amazing, it鈥檚 fun, it鈥檚 a dream come true,鈥� Noah Culpepper said right before heading to the Nats clubhouse.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been an exceptional ride. Very, very proud of the kids,鈥� said team manager Alan Bowden. 鈥淓ven though the ride is over, and we didn鈥檛 win the whole thing, finishing in the top five in the country, top six in the world in Little League was quite an accomplishment for them.”
There was also a brief reunion with a former Loudoun player.
Logan Yi used to play for Bowden. Yi spotted his former coach on the field. The two shook hands and posed for a photo. Yi, who is a high school senior now, said it was a coincidence they were on the field at the same moment.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 cool to see them here at Nats Park,鈥� Yi said of the current Loudoun South team. He told 海角精品黑料 he and his family were there for 鈥渁 hitting event with Coach Long,” the hitting coach for the Washington Nationals.
As for next year鈥檚 team, Bowden said due to new Little League age restrictions, all but three of this year鈥檚 team, will age out of the league, 鈥渆xcept for the three 11-year-olds.鈥�
But Bowden said interest in the team has blossomed.
鈥淚 did talk to the president of Loudoun South Little League this past week, and he said there was absolutely a spike in players coming in to play fall Little League Baseball,” Bowden said. “I鈥檓 sure there鈥檒l probably be more players coming in the spring, too, because the spring is when most of the players play Little League. We’re definitely hopeful that it spiked more interest with the kids because we obviously love the sport.”
