DC mayor makes plea for funds to fix Arlington Memorial Bridge

WASHINGTON鈥 聽With all eyes on the nation鈥檚 capital for the Inauguration, D.C.鈥檚 mayor used a press conference 聽on security to call on the help of the incoming president to help fix a crumbling bridge.

鈥淟et me use this as an opportunity to focus the incoming administration鈥檚 attention to the Arlington Memorial Bridge,鈥 Mayor Muriel Bowser said.

She said the bridge was an important connection to the District.

The Arlington Memorial Bridge belongs to the National Park Service and connects D.C. to the Arlington National Cemetery. But it鈥檚 in dire need of repair.

The bridge has received attention lately after weight restrictions were put in place because of its deteriorating condition.

The National Park Service has said the bill for fixing the bridge is $250 million dollars. So far, the NPS has been awarded a $90 million grant and has applied for a $60 million grant.

Even with those funds, the NPS remains millions shy of what it needs to finish the project, which will only extend the life of the bridge to 2030.
