WASHINGTON 鈥� Pitchers and catchers report to spring training Thursday, although it will be another seven weeks before actual baseball is being played at Nationals Park. But just up the road in College Park, baseball season has already begun for another team with designs on making its first-ever World Series.
The Maryland Terrapins opened their season with wins over Old Dominion, Canisius and Western Kentucky at the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, last weekend. Ranked 20th preseason by USA Today and 16th by Baseball America, the Terps have one more tournament this weekend in Mobile, Alabama, before beginning their home slate on Feb. 24 at home against VCU.
Maryland very nearly shocked the college baseball world last year, taking the University of Virginia to the brink before dropping the rubber match of their Super Regional series. The loss left them a win shy of reaching the school鈥檚 first-ever College World Series. That performance, along with their balance this season, is why Aaron Fitt and leading college baseball site ranked the Terps higher than anyone else (14th) coming into the year.
鈥淭hey went into South Carolina and destroyed them,鈥� says Fitt of the series that preceded the one against Virginia last season. 鈥淭hat was the most surprising moment of the whole season. That kind of thing could be a springboard for the program, to get them to where they belong among the nation鈥檚 elite.鈥�
The Terps are coached by John Szefc (pronounced 鈥渃hef鈥�), in his third year at the helm. Szefc is 70-48 through his first two seasons as skipper, netting the highest two-year win total in the history of the program.
鈥淗e鈥檚 just a down-to-earth, hard-nosed guy, and I think the team takes after him,鈥� says Fitt. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 get a lot of coachspeak with him. I like that, and I think players like that.鈥�
Szefc believes in pitching and defense first, and brings an aggressive baserunning approach that puts pressure on defenses and led to the second-highest stolen base total in the ACC, 30th-best in the country, last season. While they lost leading base-stealer Charlie White to the MLB Draft, Szefc doesn鈥檛 expect to lessen his aggression this season.
鈥淚t is difficult to replace his style of play, the face that he put on the offense,鈥� Szefc says about White. 鈥淏ut we have a lot of returning guys that watched guys like him work and understand how effective he was at it. As opposed to having maybe one guy with 40 steals, we may have four guys with 20.鈥�
While Szefc lost four players to the draft and has just two seniors on his roster, there’s still a lot of experience. Many of the juniors that compose the core have played since they were freshmen and gained invaluable postseason experience during last year鈥檚 deep run.
鈥淚t鈥檚 really not a young team,鈥� says Szefc, who mentioned his sophomores in addition to the junior class. 鈥淭here are guys that got a considerable amount of time last year as freshmen.鈥�
One of those guys is Friday night starter Mike Shawaryn, a 6-foot-4-inch righty who steps into the role of staff ace in his second year. And while they are still figuring out their Sunday starter, that鈥檚 more a result of a surplus of talent than a dearth of it.
鈥淭hey鈥檝e got a true ace with Mike Shawaryn,鈥� says Fitt. 鈥淎nd the pitching staff is truly deep. They have a lot of different looks they can throw at you, and one of the better bullpens in the country.鈥�
That makes Maryland a preseason favorite to win the Big Ten. Of course, the talent level within the conference is a step down from the ACC, which ranked third in RPI among conferences last season (the Big Ten was 10th). That鈥檚 why Coach Szefc has scheduled as many quality nonconference opponents as possible throughout the season. The Terps face a big test against Arkansas this weekend, and host perennial power Cal State Fullerton for a three-game set in mid-April.
Szefc hopes those challenges will give them a resume to put them in position to return to the success they enjoyed last season, and possibly more.
鈥淲e鈥檙e just trying to be consistent with our program,鈥� he says. 鈥淢ake sure it鈥檚 not a one-year thing.鈥�
And while the prospect of a first-ever trip to Omaha and the College World Series flickers in the distance, it hasn鈥檛 been posted on the bulletin board as the be-all, end-all.
鈥淲e talked about the expectations and the bar those guys set last year,鈥� says Szefc. 鈥淏ut I don鈥檛 really talk too much about the end product. I think these guys all know where they want to go, and I don鈥檛 have to tell them.鈥�
They鈥檝e already made a believer out of Fitt.
鈥淲e pick our Omaha sleepers this time of year,鈥� says Fitt. 鈥淚 was going to pick Maryland, but I don鈥檛 think they鈥檙e a sleeper. I just think they鈥檙e really balanced and complete. There鈥檚 really not an obvious weakness on this team. I think they鈥檙e a legitimate pick.鈥�
