WASHINGTON — Some of the region鈥檚 swankiest eateries and hotels are getting extra attention after more than 30 made AAA鈥檚 list of top-tier聽establishments.
On Friday, AAA announced the hotels and restaurants that earned the during the past 12 months and the list includes 33 D.C. area locations.聽The rating is AAA鈥檚 highest designations for hotels and restaurants and represent the upper echelon of the hospitality industry.
The local restaurant with the longest Five Diamond tenure is The in Washington, Virginia. The restaurant, under the leadership of Chef Patrick O鈥機onnell, has maintained the rating for 27 consecutive years.
This year, AAA聽gave the Five Diamond rating to聽121 hotels and 63 restaurants.
New this year to the list is the The Georgetown hotel received a Four Diamond rating.
A total of 2,233 establishments — 1,544 hotels and 689 restaurants — received the Four Diamond rating from AAA.
鈥淚t is all about heavenly cuisine and haute hospitality. Four and Five Diamond hotels and restaurants provide guests with a personalized experience and attentive service in comfortable, high quality surroundings,鈥� AAA Mid-Atlantic Spokesman John Townsend said in a news release.
鈥淭hese establishments consistently exceed the expectations of the most discriminating traveler 鈥� the AAA inspector. We are proud to have these dedicated businesses in our region.鈥�
To determine the ratings, AAA inspectors visit and score more than 58,000 hotels and restaurants over the course of the year. Establishments at the Four and Five Diamond rating levels make up just 3.9 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively, of the hotels and restaurants visited.
AAA has released the hotel and restaurant rankings for 79 years.
