Va. girl, 3, survives 5-story fall

WASHINGTON 鈥 A 3-year-old girl managed to survive a fall from a fifth-floor window at an apartment complex in Fairfax County. The girl fell out of a window at the Skyline Towers Apartments in Bailey鈥檚 Crossroads at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, reports.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Capt. Mike Fontana told NBC Washington that the girl鈥檚 injuries aren鈥檛 life-threatening, and that 鈥渟ome shrubs and some branches happened to break the fall.鈥

He adds that parents should safeguard their windows 鈥 don鈥檛 stack things in front of them that will make it easy for small children to climb up to the sill, and they should install window guards.

鈥淪creens are not the same as window guards, they won鈥檛 prevent a small child from falling out of a window.鈥

As of Wednesday night, the girl was still in the hospital.
