DC health club refunds some members who quit

WASHINGTON 鈥 A health club in D.C. is paying some of its members who quit. It’s part of a settlement with Washington Sports Club after the District’s top attorney found the owner violated consumer protections.

Consumers were misled with “unclear and inconsistent cancellation policies,” D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine said about how Washington Sports Club ran its聽eight health clubs in the city.

In a settlement with the health club’s owner, Town Sports International, the attorney general’s office says the suit originated after WSC charged more than a dozen people gym fees after they canceled their membership.

The customers had signed yearlong contracts with the stipulation they had to give 30 days written notice to cancel, but were also told by employees they could cancel any time by telling the gym staff.

If you were billed for membership charges after canceling your WSC聽membership, call the OAG Consumer Protection Hotline at 202-442-9828.
