Metro police report major drop in crime

WASHINGTON —聽Serious crime on Metro is at a five-year low, according to聽.

In its , part I crime — or major crimes such as homicides, rapes and robberies — was down 27 percent, or about 5.2 crimes per million riders compared with the same 12-month period in 2013.

Transit Police attributed the reduction — which includes Metrobus, Metrorail and parking lots — to multiple factors: increased customer awareness and outreach; data-driven officer deployment tactics and improvements in technology, among other things.

In addition, the following crimes are down:

  • Snatch theft of mobile devices by 52 percent
  • Bicycle theft by 22 percent
  • Robberies by 35 percent

Also, sexual harassment complaints were down 13 percent in 2014, according to Metro information.
