Police: Drunk, naked man wields hatchet after being mistaken for Uber driver

A Gainesville man was arrested early Sunday morning after a bizarre incident in the Crystal City area.

It all started聽around 2:20 a.m., on the 400 block of 23rd Street South, when聽three people walked up to the suspect鈥檚 car, thinking聽it was their Uber ride.

A聽鈥渧erbal altercation ensued,鈥 according to police,聽and then聽the suspect, who was drunk and naked at the time, grabbed a hatchet from the backseat and 鈥渟tarted swinging the object.鈥 The three individuals managed to take聽the hatchet away from the man before he hurt anyone, police said.

The suspect tried to flee the scene but was soon stopped by a U.S. Park Police officer in the 2300 block of S. Eads Street, according to an Arlington County Police Department crime report.

The suspect refused a field sobriety test.

Michael Monroe, 64, now faces numerous charges in connection with the incident.
