Fast-moving storms made their way through the DMV from about 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. with some packing high winds, to cap off a day of record-breaking heat.

There are reports of trees and power lines down in Middleburg from wind gusts that went up to 60 mph there and other parts of Northern Virginia.

“We had a punch of severe weather, and there will be more to come on Sunday” said Veronica Johnson, 7 News First Alert chief meteorologist.

Meanwhile, on Saturday expect temperatures to hit about 90 degrees, but with low humidity, which will feel like a relief after Friday’s elevated heat index.

At 8:30 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Route 50 corridor, central Anne Arundel County and northeastern Prince Georges County until 9 p.m.

Wind gusts over 80 mph were recorded on the Bay Bridge at 9 p.m., the NWS announced.

The NWS cancelled severe storm warnings in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland and in 23 counties in Virginia including Arlington, Stafford, Fauquier, Prince William and Fairfax counties.

Outside of the stormy weather, Friday was extremely hot and humid. 海角精品黑料 Meteorologist Mike Stinneford said temperatures reached a record high of 98 degrees at Reagan Airport, shattering the old record of 95 set in 2017.

Highs were in the upper 90s Friday, but temperatures felt much hotter, possibly as high as 105 degrees, according to NWS.

The severe weather hit D.C. as the region was working to recover from Thursday’s damaging storms that knocked out power for tens of thousands of people and toppled trees, killing two women.

“Once the storms clear later this evening, we’ll see our temperatures drop to the 60s,” said 7 News First Alert Meteorologist Steve Rudin

2 dead from Thursday’s storms

Two women were killed by fallen trees in Maryland during Thursday night’s storms, according to officials.

One woman was trapped under a fallen tree near Matthew Henson Trail between Spruce Hill Road and Regina Drive in Aspen Hill at around 9 p.m., according to a spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services.

She did not survive her injuries.

Around the same time, fire crews in Prince George’s County responded to North Marlton Avenue near Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro, where another woman was found with traumatic injuries after being hit by a fallen tree. She died at the scene.

Fire officials told 海角精品黑料 that there appeared to have been several “microbursts” of thunderstorms in a short period of time Thursday. Those microbursts can produce damaging winds of over 100 mph and are often mistaken for tornadoes.

Cleanup from Thursday evening’s storms carried into Friday morning, 海角精品黑料’s Neal Augenstein reported.

In Silver Spring, Maryland, the storm sheared off the top of a utility pole located at the intersection of Silver Spring Avenue and Nolte Avenue. Downed utility wires were draped across bushes and driveways in the tightly-configured neighborhood.

Tree crews began work at sunrise to stand-up new utility poles that had been delivered overnight on a flatbed truck.

DC-area crews clean up after recent storm damage

Nearby, the burned-out shell of a car that caught fire during the storm remained. The owner of the car walked from a nearby home to inspect the damage in the early morning sun.

Weekend weather

Saturday is projected to be a calmer weather day, with a mix of sunshine and a few passing clouds.

“Plenty of sunshine, lower humidity, so that stickiness factor won’t be there, 85 to 90 degrees,” Rudin said.

But severe weather is back in the forecast Sunday with a humid air mass and a cold front leading to possible scattered showers and thunderstorms. Those with outdoor plans should reconsider.

Post columnist ‘had to fight back’ after being fired for Charlie Kirk social media post /dc/2026/06/post-columnist-had-to-fight-back-after-being-fired-for-charlie-kirk-social-media-post/ Fri, 05 Jun 2026 15:42:40 +0000 /?p=29319661 For over a decade at The Washington Post, Karen Attiah was writing opinion columns on race, culture, gender and human rights.

Then, in September 2025, after the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, she posted on social media about America’s double standards relating to political violence and said Kirk was

her former employer said her social media post “violate(s) The Post’s social media policies, harm the integrity of our organization, and potentially endanger the physical safety of our staff.”

Attiah, the Washington Post Guild and the Washington-Baltimore News Guild filed a grievance against the news organization to challenge her firing, arguing that it went .

“We’re just living in a climate right now where there are so many attacks on press freedom, attacks on our institution that I think for me personally it just felt right,” Attiah told 海角精品黑料 before her arbitration hearing.

“I was just doing my joband to be punished for just doing my job.I had to fight back.”

Attiah said she sees her firing as part of the changing media landscape that includes mass layoffs, eliminations of news departments and attacks on the press, among others.

It’s an extremely pressure-cooker time for journalism and journalists,” she said.

Attiah isn鈥檛 alone in the fight as she has a ton of supporters, including the Washington Association of Black Journalists (WABJ), the largest chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists.

鈥淜aren Attiah鈥檚 firing was another example in the worrying pattern to stifle and silence Black voices,鈥 Phil Lewis, president of the Washington Association of Black Journalists. 鈥淎s an opinion columnist, Karen鈥檚 role is to help readers sit with uncomfortable truths. We need those voices now more than ever.鈥

Confidence about her case

The hearing on Thursday was long, as both The Washington Post and the Washington-Baltimore News Guild made their arguments. Attiah was called to testify about the Bluesky post after Charlie Kirk’s death that led to her firing.

Amos Laor, general counsel of the Washington-Baltimore News Guild said she explained she was “eventually fired for doing exactly what she was hired to do.”

“What she was trained to do, what she was evaluated in, what The Post evaluated for and The Postpraised her for doing writing opinions, writing smart and sharp social media posts with commentary on the pressing issues of the time,” such asrace and political violence.

Laor and Attiah are both confident that they made a compelling case and their chances of prevailing in this arbitration.

“I made a very strong, solid case that there was no cause for termination,” Attiah said.

Laor said the decision will be made by a neutral arbitrator within two to three months.

“It was an opportunity for Attiah to finally present her story because she was 11 years (as a) columnist of The Post,” Laor said.

“This was, I think, an important moment for Attiah to finally get the opportunity to present her side and to argue against her wrongful termination.”

Curiosity as a journalist

Although she hails from Texas, Attiah’s background has roots in West Africa. Her mother is Ghanaian-Nigerian and her father was Ghanaian. She said her heritage contributed to her curiosity of the world.

I’m curious how other people live, other cultures live. So I brought that to my journalism. 鈥 To be able to bring voices from other backgrounds, other cultures, other countries,” Attiah said. “It’s foundational to me as a journalist.”

When she worked at The Washington Post from 2014 to 2025, she wrote on high-profile stories, including pieces about Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi journalist whom she recruited to the Post in 2017 and who was killed in 2018 by the agents of the Saudi government.

Attiah edited his last article for the newspaper.

She also wrote about the Nigerian government bringing back girls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram.

“Generally, my interest and passion was to help people who were being oppressed and having their voices taken away, and using a platform at the post to be able to help people,” Attiah said.

In 2019, she and fellow columnist David Ignatius were awarded the George Polk Award for their commentary on Khashoggi’s killing.

Diversity in journalism

As the last full-time Black opinion columnist for the paper, she believes that diversity is important so that people know what’s going on in the diverse communities and how it shapes the news coverage.

“It just enriches the journalism, brings more readers, brings more money,” Attiah said. “This is a key part of why I wanted to enter journalism 鈥 to help empower other voices.”

She hopes that in her fight against her termination from The Washington Post and against the attacks on diversity and DEI, journalists are inspired to fight back.

“I think for me it’s to demonstrate not only fighting back individually, but the importance of organization, solidarity, collective action and just that our voices matter,” Attiah said. “They matter, they’re worth fighting for.”

海角精品黑料 reached out to The Washington Post for comment on Attiah’s firing and arbitration hearing.

Authorities seek witnesses of deadly I-95 bus crash in Stafford /stafford-county/2026/06/authorities-seek-witnesses-of-deadly-i-95-bus-crash-in-stafford/ Thu, 04 Jun 2026 08:40:30 +0000 /?p=29319720 Authorities are asking witnesses to come forward as they investigate last week’s bus crash on southbound Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Virginia that killed five people and left 44 people injured.

Virginia State Police said their initial investigation found that on May 29 around 2:35 a.m., a bus was that heading to Charlotte, North Carolina, from New York City when failed to slow down as it approached traffic that was slowing on southbound I-95 due to a work zone.

The bus, carrying 34 people, hit six vehicles, including a Chevrolet Suburban, which then hit an Acura SUV.

NTSB said a high rate of speed played a role in the crash.

Four of the fatalities occurred inside the Acura: Dmitri and Ecaterina Doncev, 45 and 44 respectively, and their children Emily and Mark. The family were from Greenfield, Massachusetts. The remaining victim was Priscilla R. Mafalda, 25, of Worcester, Massachusetts, who was inside the Chevrolet.

The bus driver in the crash was identified by Virginia State Police as Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island. Authorities said he was charged with five counts of involuntary manslaughter and one misdemeanor count of reckless driving.

Anyone with information or video of the crash is asked to contact authorities at 804-750-8778.

The investigation is ongoing, as officials from NTSB said that they will release a preliminary report before June 30.

NTSB member Tom Chapman said in a news conference Saturday that they’re still in the early phases of the investigation and are not ready to provide any conclusions, but confirmed that the bus was traveling at a high rate of speed.

“We will not be determining the probable cause of the crash while we’re on scene nor will we speculate about the cause,” Chapman said. “These are the first steps in a lengthy investigative process.”

Officials said during the news conference that they will release a preliminary report within 30 days.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash happened around 2:35 a.m. on southbound I-95 in Stafford County, near Quantico.

All five people who died were in vehicles struck by the bus and 44 people were taken to hospitals, including three in critical condition, police said.

The bus failed to slow down while approaching the zone and struck a Chevrolet Suburban, causing a chain-reaction where the SUV crashed into an Acura and other vehicles.

The bus then hit additional vehicles. Police said that coach bus, operated by E&P Travel, was carrying around 34 occupants from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Four of the people who were killed were inside the Acura: Dmitri Doncev, 45, Ecaterina Doncev, 44, and their children Emily and Mark. They were from Greenfield, Massachusetts.

Priscilla R. Mafalda, a 25-year-old woman from Worcester, Massachusetts, was inside the Suburban that was struck by the bus and died in the collision, according to the NTSB.

State police identified the bus driver as Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York. Authorities said he was charged with two counts of voluntary manslaughter.

The bus was operated by E&P Travel Inc. of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. A compliance snapshot from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration showed one injury crash involving the company鈥檚 vehicles in the previous two years and listed its safety rating as satisfactory.

Suspect in custody after shooting at White House correspondents’ dinner /dc/2026/04/suspect-in-custody-after-shooting-at-white-house-correspondents-dinner/ Sun, 26 Apr 2026 03:36:15 +0000 /?p=29183142 A suspect is in custody following a shooting outside the White House correspondents’ dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel Saturday, which led to President Donald Trump and attendees’ evacuation.

The man suspected of opening fire at the White House Correspondents鈥 Association Dinner on Saturday night worked as a teacher and video game developer from Southern California, according to public records, as reported by CNN.

Cole Tomas Allen, 31, who lives in the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance, has been identified by law enforcement as the armed man subdued near the dinner where President Trump and other officials had gathered, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer reports that the shooting occurred on the floor above where the dinner was being held. Blitzer said he was very close to the gunman and that a police officer threw him to the ground in an effort to protect him.

“A guy with a very, very serious weapon starts shooting. I happened to be a few feet away from him,” Blitzer said, adding that the shooter was shooting randomly.

“I’m guessing I heard at least half a dozen gunshots. 鈥 They were so loud,” he said.

Authorities said the shooter fired shots inside the hotel before being apprehended by the Secret Service.

“Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

The president gave additional details about the shooter at a press conference at the White House.

Robert Mueller remembered for his nonpartisan leadership in transforming the FBI /government/2026/03/robert-mueller-remembered-for-his-nonpartisan-leadership-in-transforming-the-fbi/ Sun, 22 Mar 2026 00:10:54 +0000 /?p=29068773
海角精品黑料 National Security Correspondent J.J. Green joined Sandy Kozel to talk about Robert Mueller's career and legacy.

Experts are remembering Robert Mueller for his nonpartisan leadership in transforming the FBI into a terrorism-fighting force after the 9/11 attacks.

The former FBI director died Friday at the age of 81, according to a statement from his family. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2021.

Mueller was also the special counsel in charge of the Department of Justice’s investigation into the ties between Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russia.

“They remember him as a straight shooter, they remember him as an honest man, and they remember him as somebody who worked hard,” 海角精品黑料’s National Security Correspondent J.J. Green said about Mueller in an interview.

Mueller became the FBI director after his nomination by then-President George W. Bush, just a week before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. He was the head of the agency for 12 years, the longest-serving FBI director besides J. Edgar Hoover. Mueller worked under Bush and former President Barack Obama.

Green said that Mueller’s “career highlights are anchored in both crisis leadership and institutional transformation.”

During his FBI tenure, Mueller oversaw the agency’s transition “into a national security-focused agency, and expanded their counterterrorism and intelligence operations,” Green said, adding that investigating Trump’s ties to Russia placed him “again, in the center of a politically charged national moment.”

President Trump after hearing about his death, claiming he was glad the former special prosecutor who had investigated Trump had died, sparking outrage in U.S. media circles.

Mueller’s report on Trump’s Russian ties during his 2016 presidential campaign was released in 2019, and didn’t conclude the president had committed a crime, but didn’t exonerate him either.

“I’m sure there are other people who Robert Mueller may have been instrumental in putting behind bars 鈥 who may feel the same way,” Green said. “But I think the American public is going to know that right after 911 it was largely due to Robert Mueller’s expertise and capabilities and leadership that protected the nation and built this massive system that, by and large, works very well, that we call DHS (Department of Homeland Security) right now.”

Despite Trump’s disparagement, Mueller was highly regarded by people as a man of honor and integrity, according to Green.

During the latter part of his tenure as the FBI director, two terrorist attacks 鈥 the Boston Marathon bombing in April 2013 and the Fort Hood shootings in Texas 鈥 deeply affected Mueller because of his experience serving in Vietnam as a Marine officer from 1968 to 1971. According to Green, Mueller’s vulnerability revealed that he was human.

“Doing what he did in the way he served with the group that he served with, that kind of put a different approach in his mind about how to serve the nation after going through something like that and surviving it,” Green said.

Green said that he spent the entire 12 years of Mueller’s career trying to score an interview and never did one. When Green ran into the FBI chief at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, “I told him that I had been trying to book him for an interview and I could never get through. And he said, ‘Well, you got me now.'”

“It kind of speaks to Bob Mueller,” Green said. “He really was just a straightforward kind of guy who believed in service.”

Police: Mother kills 2-year-old, husband, mother-in-law in Prince William Co. home /prince-william-county/2026/02/toddler-father-and-mother-in-law-stabbed-to-death-in-apparent-murder-suicide-in-woodbridge-home/ Mon, 23 Feb 2026 22:03:03 +0000 /?p=28958744 A mother killed her 2-year-old son, husband and mother-in-law before taking her own life inside the family’s Woodbridge, Virginia, home on Saturday, according to police.

Prince William County police arrived to the home in the 3400 block of Vale Court around 8 a.m. Saturday where they found the family of four stabbed to death in an apparent murder-suicide.

According to Monday, 35-year-old Ziyi Lu is believed to have attacked her family.听Lu allegedly stabbed her mother-in-law, Kegang Xie, 69, and her husband, Danxiong Gao, 40.

An autopsy confirmed Lu, and the three other family members, died from “knife-related injuries.”

The couple’s 2-year-old son was also killed. The child won’t be publicly named because of his age, police said.

The grandfather of the 2-year-old discovered the family Saturday morning after the attack had unfolded, police said.

Col. Peter Newsham, Prince William County鈥檚 police chief, called the murder-suicide “the worst possible nightmare.”

鈥淲e don鈥檛 know the exact cause or the motive in this case, but just to see a family destroyed like this is horrific,鈥 Newsham said Saturday.

Police said the weapon that was used in the stabbing was recovered.

Former congressional staffer from Maryland charged with stealing 240 government cellphones /maryland/2026/01/former-congressional-staffer-from-maryland-charged-with-stealing-240-government-cellphones/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 16:07:45 +0000 /?p=28821596 A former congressional staffer from Glen Burnie, Maryland, is accused of stealing 240 government cellphones from the U.S. House of Representatives.

Christopher Southerland, 43, was arrested earlier this month and charged with stealing cellphones worth more than $150,000, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office.

Southerland was a system administrator for the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure from April 2020 until July 2023 and had the power to order the devices for staff members of the committee.

, Southerland used his government position to order the devices and have them shipped to his Maryland home. He allegedly sold more than 200 of those phones to a local pawn shop.

At the time of the alleged thefts, there were only 80 members who worked on the committee.

Southerland told a worker at the pawn shop to sell the phones in parts to get around the government software that remotely detects its phones, prosecutors said.

Authorities were made aware of his scheme after one of the stolen phones was purchased off eBay. When the person who bought the phone turned it on, prosecutors said it showed the phone number of the House of Representatives Technology Service Desk.

The person who bought the device called the number, and other House employees then learned that phones bought by Southerland were unaccounted for, prosecutors said.
