The rule of supply versus demand hits high gear during the holiday season, with record numbers of travelers expected in airports nationwide.

It’s also prime time for rideshares as Uber and Lyft are charging a premium to get your business.

Digital expert Kim Komando said there are ways to make the most of your next airport ride.

“Check both Uber and Lyft at the same time,” Komando told 海角精品黑料. “They know that they’re in competition with each other for that ride and the fare actually will come down at least by 10%.”

But there are still ways to save. Picking a different airline in the app 鈥 even for the exact same drop off spot 鈥 could change the cost of your ride by over 30%.

Uber reportedly treats each airline as a location in its system, even when they share the same terminal. That can mean differences in demand, driver supply or other conditions that will affect what you get charged.

Also when your plane lands, hundreds of people are opening their phones all at once, and chances are there are enough people requesting a rideshare to trigger even higher surge pricing.

Waiting until the rush passes 鈥 or requesting at 17 and 42 minutes after the hour 鈥 can save you up to 30%, Komando said.

“The surge pricing algorithms normally spike at the top and bottom of the hour,” she said.

You can also take complimentary shuttles to a nearby hotel or car rental counter, many of which are outside the designated surge zone.

“These spots are normally outside the surge zone and the fares can drop by maybe even $20 or $30,” Komando said.

Finally, once you get a price, try force closing the app and then reopening it 5 to 10 minutes later. The algorithm will most likely see that as a new request.

“Maybe it will also show you a lower price,” Komando said.

Trump wants his name on new Washington Commanders stadium in DC /washington-commanders/2025/11/trump-wants-his-name-on-new-washington-commanders-stadium-in-dc/ Sat, 08 Nov 2025 18:13:35 +0000 /?p=28565487 With efforts underway to build an updated Washington Commanders football stadium at the old RFK Stadium site in D.C., President Donald Trump allegedly wants the new facility named after himself, according to an that broke Saturday.

Trump administration officials and a member of the Commanders’ ownership group have been engaged in backchannel discussions on the matter, a senior White House source told ESPN.

“That would be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote in a statement to ESPN.

The sports outlet says she declined to answer additional questions, but added, “It’s what the president wants, and it will probably happen.”

A Commanders spokesperson declined to comment. The office of the city鈥檚 mayor, Muriel Bowser, declined comment, according to The Associated Press.

Trump is scheduled to attend the Commanders’ home game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday; a team source told ESPN that while stakeholders expect to have conversations with Trump about the stadium name at the game, no formal discussions have taken place so far.

The Commanders do own the new stadium’s naming rights, presumably to be sold to a corporate sponsor. The final call will likely be made by the D.C. Council, which will lease the stadium to the Commanders, and the National Park Service, which manages the land on which the facility will be built.

Former President Joe Biden signed a bill in January that transferred the land that had the old stadium from control of the federal government to the District.

The new stadium was first teased in April by Bowser and Commanders owner Josh Harris. Back in July, Trump said he would block the construction of the stadium if Harris did not change the team name from Commanders back to its former Redskins moniker. Regardless, in September, the stadium was officially approved with an 11-2 council vote. It’s slated to be finished in 2030.

In an open letter to his constituents Thursday, the 74-year-old Democrat said he has cancer of the esophagus. Connolly added he has no symptoms aside from intermittent abdominal pains and will be undergoing chemotherapy right away.

“Cancer can be tough. But so am I,” Connolly said. “I will attack this the only way I know how 鈥 with Irish fight and humor.”

Connolly said he learned of his diagnosis “a few days ago.”

Earlier this week, Connolly, who was first elected to Congress in 2008, secured a ninth term in office on Election Day. Connolly represents Virginia’s Congressional District 11, which includes parts of Fairfax County as well as Fairfax City.

The congressman did acknowledge that his treatment could affect him on the job.

“Over the next few months as I do my job here in our district and on the Hill, I may be a bit fatigued due to the treatment,” Connolly said. “I hope you鈥檒l understand.”

He closed out his letter by assuring voters that he is still looking forward “to serving you all in this new term and in the future” and that he would see his constituents “on the hustings.”

Outpouring of support: ‘He will emerge from this even stronger’

In a joint statement, Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner of Virginia called Connolly a fighter and said they have no doubt he will face “this challenge with the same determination and grit that have defined his public service.”

The senators said they are inspired by the congressman’s courage and look forward to working with him in the future.

“Gerry has always been a steadfast advocate for the people of Northern Virginia, and we know that he will continue to show that same fierce commitment as he faces this battle,” the statement read. “We are confident he will emerge from this even stronger, as he has done time and time again.”

Other politicians and Connolly’s constituents shared messages of support for the congressman on social media Thursday.

Rep. Abigail Spanberger of Virginia called Connolly a “true fighter” for the Commonwealth.

“I know he will meet this next fight with that same dogged determination,” .听

Del. Suhas Subramanyam shared a similar sentiment to Spanberger.

“He has always been a fighter for Northern Virginia, and we know he will fight this too,”聽 Subramanyam said .

On Tuesday, Subramanyam was elected to fill an open seat in the U.S. House in a Northern Virginia congressional district that borders Connolly’s.

Rep. Don Beyer, who also represents a Northern Virginia district, said he’s sending support to Connolly and his family.

“His kindness, humor, and unwavering dedication to his district inspire us all, and I know he will tackle this diagnosis with incredible strength,” Beyer said.

, “Sending love and strength to Gerry Connolly, a born fighter and champion of the people. We are all with you every step in your fight against cancer.”

Supervisor James Walkinshaw ,聽“Over the course of our 18-year friendship, I鈥檝e seen Gerry Connolly take on hundreds of battles, each with courage, fortitude, and a dose of Irish humor. I have no doubt he鈥檒l take on 鈥 and win 鈥 this battle with that same spirit.”

The outpouring of uplifting messages went beyond the D.C. area.

Reps. Joe Morelle and Adriano Espaillat of New York posted on social media calling Connolly an inspiration.

“His unwavering spirit and positivity are an inspiration to us all. Standing with him and looking forward to his full recovery,” Morelle said.

Virginia passes law requiring stringent age verification for porn sites /virginia/2023/03/virginia-passes-law-requiring-stringent-age-verification-for-porn-sites/ Sun, 12 Mar 2023 20:31:53 +0000 /?p=24608726 Virginia lawmakers have passed a law that requires adult websites to use more stringent age verification measures to prevent access by minors.

, adult websites must implement advanced verification methods, requiring users to provide government-issued IDs, biometric scans or submit to age verification software.

The new law applies to websites where at least 33.3% of its content can be considered “material harmful to minors.”

In the bill, “material harmful to minors” is defined as:

” 鈥 any description or representation of nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement, or sadomasochistic abuse when it (i) appeals to the prurient, shameful, or morbid interest of minors, (ii) is patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community as a whole with respect to what is suitable material for minors, and (iii) is, when taken as a whole, lacking in serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for minors.”

The bill does not mention how the state would enforce the new law when most adult websites operate outside of the jurisdiction of Virginia and the United States.

Critics of the bill say the legislation raises data privacy concerns while doing little to protect minors.

A 2022 report by Common Sense Media says most children see adult material online by the age of 12, with 15% seeing it by age 10 or younger.

On Jan. 1, an near identical law went into effect in Louisiana that requires users to provide government issued ID’s when accessing pornographic websites. Similar bills have been proposed at other statehouses around the U.S.

Burst frozen pipes at Prince George’s Co. church draws crowd of helping hands /prince-georges-county/2022/12/burst-frozen-pipes-at-prince-georges-co-church-draws-crowd-of-helping-hands/ Mon, 26 Dec 2022 15:23:49 +0000 /?p=24354475
Listen to 海角精品黑料's Ralph Fox report on the church.

On a frigid Christmas Day, church leaders of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Laurel, Maryland, got a call from their local fire department.

The church held their services as usual on Christmas morning but were alerted of burst pipes in the building later that afternoon.

When they arrived, senior Pastor Peter DeMik said, water was coming down profusely with cold weather presumed to be the culprit.

Members of Our Savior Lutheran Church came out on Christmas Day to help their church and pastor after frozen pipes burst and flooded the day care.

The main damage was to the day care area 鈥 but a simple call for help brought out a large crowd of the congregation that showed up with mops, fans and vacuums in hand.

“Christmas is about gifts that we give to one another and exchange, but the gift of time and willing hearts and service we saw was just an incredible blessing and certainly a demonstration of God’s love,” DeMik said.

Parishioners of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Laurel, Md., came out to help their pastor after frozen pipes burst and flooded the church.

Parishioner Robb Wilmot said his family headed over immediately when they got the call for help.

“We just headed over there with mops and buckets 鈥 it was like waves of water because people were mopping and pushing and squeegeeing and trying to get all of this water out,” Wilmot said. “Despite the work, people were in good spirits.”

Pastor DeMik said they will need professional help to be able to reopen the day care and an estimate for damages is pending.

Church leaders expect repairs to happen early this week, but some are worried about their child care as they return to work after the holidays.

Early research from the 聽shows at least 20 percent of all veterans who fought in Iraq or Afghanistan have suffered a TBI. Many heal within weeks or months, but others suffer long-lasting implications.

hopes to track 1,100 veterans over a 20-year period to learn more about the issue and how such an injury聽can best be evaluated or treated. Only 700 have signed up so far.

Dr. William Walker, a TBI expert at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center聽and Virginia Commonwealth University, is leading the new study. He says the long-term observational study is one of the most comprehensive TBI projects to date in terms of size, scope and rigor.

Veterans Affairs聽sites in Houston, Tampa, San Antonio and Richmond are enrolling in the study, including a defense site, the National Center for the Intrepid at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. An additional three VA sites will start enrolling in the spring in Boston, Minneapolis and Portland.

Walker says one reason for the long time period of the study is the need to look at neurodegenerative conditions that develop only later in life, such as Alzheimer’s or chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). CTE has been in the news in recent years largely because of its link to concussions among athletes in sports including聽football, boxing and hockey.

Report: Body-worn camera test a success, Prince William Co. police chief says /prince-william-county/2017/01/report-prince-william-co-police-cameras-beneficial-chief-says/ /prince-william-county/2017/01/report-prince-william-co-police-cameras-beneficial-chief-says/#respond Mon, 23 Jan 2017 10:04:36 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=12290906 WASHINGTON 鈥 The Prince William County Police Department tested body-worn cameras on 30 officers for 60 days, and Chief Barry Barnard said the officers found it to be beneficial and an overall success.

The next step is to get a green light from county supervisors to implement the program full-time, at an estimated cost of $600,000 to start, then $700,000 per year, .

鈥淲hen you first turn on the camera and go out on Day One, it鈥檚 a learning process for the officers, but what we鈥檝e found is that officers appreciate the cameras. If we move forward, we want to move slowly, crawl before you walk, and make adjustments based on continued feedback from all stakeholders,鈥 .

Officers have the discretion to determine when to turn the cameras on or off. State laws prevent sensitive footage from being released.

For instance, Barnard suggested that any footage deemed 鈥渆videntiary鈥 by the department could be shielded from disclosure through a public records request, as could any video depicting 鈥渧ictim statements, witness statements from sexual assault victims, or footage from inside a hospital.鈥

Barnard said the body-worn cameras were most valuable when dealing with citizen complaints or providing court evidence.听 A board meeting Jan. 17 tabled the issue for a future closed-door session.

Food prep, storage, just as important in children’s nutrition /food-restaurant/2016/09/food-prep-storage-just-important-childrens-nutrition/ /food-restaurant/2016/09/food-prep-storage-just-important-childrens-nutrition/#respond Mon, 05 Sep 2016 09:23:15 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=10399656 WASHINGTON 鈥 With the new school year, Virginia’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has a few friendly prep and storage reminders for kids’ meals before, during and after lunch.

Food safety experts said聽preparing and storing the foods your kids eat is just as important to their health as the food itself. Harmful bacteria can grow rapidly at temperatures as low as 40 degrees.

Helpful hints include:

Food Packing聽

  • If the lunch or snack contains perishable food items like luncheon meats, eggs, cheese or yogurt, make sure to pack it with at least two cold sources.
  • Frozen juice boxes or water can also be used as freezer packs. Freeze these items overnight and use with at least one other freezer pack. By lunchtime, the liquids should be thawed and ready to drink.
  • If packing a lunch the night before, leave it in the refrigerator overnight. The meal will stay cold longer because everything will be refrigerator temperature when it is placed in the lunchbox.
  • If packing snacks for the team, troop or group, keep perishable foods in a cooler with ice or cold packs until snack time. Pack snacks in individual bags or containers, rather than having children share food from one serving dish.

Food Storage

  • Store food in the refrigerator (40 degrees or below) or freezer (zero degrees or below).

Eating and Disposal

  • Pack disposable wipes for washing hands before and after eating.
