As part of the state’s budget, $4.75 million will go to preserving land and promoting tourism at Civil War battlefield sites throughout the Shenandoah Valley over the next two years.

Keven Walker, CEO of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, the management entity for the battlefields, said that receiving the funding is a “seminal moment” for the area.

鈥淚t is an unprecedented and unparalleled investment in battlefield parks and battlefield tourism, one that will benefit the citizens of Virginia for decades to come,鈥 Walker said

The money will be used to develop seven new battlefield parks across four counties (Frederick, Shenandoah, Rockingham and Highland), totaling 1,731 acres.

It will also aid multiple improvements with highway signage, parking facilities, trailheads, restroom facilities, trails, interpretive signage, environmental protections and fencing. The release also stated that the funding will also help with the completion of the Shenandoah Valley Civil War Museum and the creation of the New Market history and education center.

Del. Todd Gilbert worked on bringing the funding to the battlefields. The Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates said in a statement that he was “honored” to be part of the team that made the funding possible, adding that the state’s history “runs through the Shenandoah Valley.”

鈥淭hese funds will build on the great work already done by the Foundation and others who have fought to preserve these hallowed, historic grounds, and ensure that they鈥檙e here for future generations to experience, learn from, and enjoy,” Gilbert said.

According to an independent study by the National Park Service, the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District generated $291.3 million through tourism and supports 3,930 jobs.

Dan Snyder won’t appear before House committee looking into Commanders /washington-commanders/2022/06/dan-snyder-wont-appear-before-house-committee-looking-into-commanders/ /washington-commanders/2022/06/dan-snyder-wont-appear-before-house-committee-looking-into-commanders/#respond Thu, 16 Jun 2022 00:00:19 +0000 /?p=23724916 Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder will not appear next week before the congressional committee investigating the team’s workplace culture and the NFL鈥檚 handling of misconduct allegations.

Snyder was supposed to testify before the House Oversight and Reform Committee on June 22.

that a letter was sent to New York Democrat Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who chairs the committee. The letter says Snyder remains willing to cooperate.

鈥淒espite months of Mr. Snyder鈥檚 cooperation, the Oversight Committee refused to afford the same respect and courtesy by declining multiple reasonable requests surrounding a potential appearance by Mr. Snyder. Mr. Snyder remains willing to continue cooperating with the Committee but is unable to attend the June 22 hearing given the Committee鈥檚 disregard for due process,鈥 a source close to Snyder told 海角精品黑料.

A lawyer for Snyder told The Associated Press that the move was due to a lack of assurance about the scope of questioning — given the existence of multiple ongoing investigations — and a scheduling conflict preventing Snyder from appearing in person.

Maloney has said the committee鈥檚 goal has been to uncover the truth about the culture of harassment and abuse at the Washington Commanders, to hold accountable those responsible, and to better protect workers across the country.

The NFL team is facing allegations from some former employees, including cheerleaders, that there was widespread sexual harassment at the franchise.

A spokeswoman for the committee said it intends to move forward with the hearing as scheduled and plans to respond to the letter from Snyder’s camp.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has accepted the invitation to testify and informed the committee on Wednesday that he will appear virtually, league spokesman Brian McCarthy said.

Congress launched an investigation into the team’s workplace culture after an independent review overseen by the league prompted a $10 million fine, but did not include a written report to be released to the public.

Loudoun Co. warns residents of jury duty phone scams /loudoun-county/2022/05/loudoun-co-warns-residents-of-jury-duty-phone-scams/ /loudoun-county/2022/05/loudoun-co-warns-residents-of-jury-duty-phone-scams/#respond Thu, 19 May 2022 21:55:05 +0000 /?p=23638010 Don’t fall for a new scam: It involves jury duty.

Loudoun County, Virginia, authorities are reminding residents to be aware of jury duty scams. People report receiving phone calls in which a caller claiming to be a local sheriff’s deputy says an arrest warrant has been issued against them because they never appeared for jury duty.

The scammer then tells the would-be target they could avoid arrest by paying a fine.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court say their officials are not permitted to collect fines of this nature.

In reality, failure to report for jury duty would lead to an official written notice from the circuit court with instruction on what to do, not a phone call soliciting payment.

鈥淭he jury duty scam works on the victims’ emotions. These thieves use the appearance of authority and prey on a person鈥檚 fears in hopes that the victim will be more willing to provide the money,鈥 Sheriff Mike Chapman said in a news release.

Any Loudoun County residents who were a victim of this scam are asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 703-777-1021 or .

An elderly woman is dead of her injuries in a Northeast D.C. duplex blaze Monday night after being rescued from the burning building’s upper floor.

A D.C. Fire and EMS unit was headed to refuel when they spotted smoke in the area of 10th Street, in the Michigan Park neighborhood, around 11:30 p.m. Monday.

While investigating, they found a fire in a two-story duplex at 4814 10th St. NE and radioed for assistance.

First responders found flames tearing through the first floor, and pulled a woman from the second. They evaluated her to be in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, and she was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The woman died from her injuries, the fire department later tweeted 鈥 the second fire death in the nation’s capital this year, of which both have been senior citizens.

Her name had not been made public as of Monday morning.

There were no smoke detectors in the home. District fire officials encourage residents without a smoke detector to call 311 to have one installed for free.

Jet ski accident in Anne Arundel Co. kills 2 /anne-arundel-county/2019/07/jet-ski-accident-in-anne-arundel-co-kills-2/ /anne-arundel-county/2019/07/jet-ski-accident-in-anne-arundel-co-kills-2/#respond Wed, 03 Jul 2019 12:27:43 +0000 /?p=19887179 Two people are dead after a jet ski accident in the South River in Edgewater, Maryland, marking six deaths on Anne Arundel County waters in less than a week.

The crash happened on a stretch of river between Riva and Solomons Island Roads.

Anne Arundel County Fire officials said the two people, an adult man and woman, had left a home along Edgewater Drive around 1:30 a.m. About an hour later, a 911 call was made because the two hadn’t returned.

The caller “indicated that they thought they heard the sound of a collision around 1:45 a.m., but didn’t notify us until they failed to return,” said Captain Russ Davies, a spokesman for Anne Arundel County Fire.

A former spokeswoman for Natural Resources Police notes it鈥檚 illegal to ride a jet ski between sunset and sunrise.

The fire department鈥檚 dive team was joined by Maryland Natural Resources Police, the Coast Guard and Maryland State Police in the search for the two people. They 鈥渇ound evidence where a jet ski had struck a marker in the South River. Further investigation, we did find a partially submerged jet ski鈥 said Davies.

The marker, only a few hundred feet from the home where the couple left, is also around where the man鈥檚 body was found. It鈥檚 estimated that the river depth there is about 17 feet. The jet ski and the woman were both found about a 1,000 yards further upstream, in water believed to be about 14-feet deep.

A neighbor told 海角精品黑料 that the couple lived in Virginia but owned a second home along the river, and that they had just bought the jet ski a few days ago. Neither of them appeared to be wearing life jackets on the water.

Seven people have died just in Anne Arundel County waters in the last month 鈥 six since this past Saturday night 鈥 a number fire officials say is more than they can recall dying on the water in any year in recent memory.

Four of those people died in water-related incidents over the weekend, including a man who drowned in Edgewater Sunday morning and a secret service agent who drowned after her kayak flipped in the Severn River Saturday.

Inabinett was charged in November with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct. Jury selection in her trial was set to begin Monday.

Airlines still delayed after technical issues resolved /travel/2019/04/airline-technical-problems-cause-delays/ /travel/2019/04/airline-technical-problems-cause-delays/#respond Mon, 01 Apr 2019 14:00:58 +0000 /?p=19512378

Technical issues with a third-party vendor brought hundreds of flights to a halt across the nation Monday morning.

Greg Martin, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman, tells 海角精品黑料 the system is back online.

The FAA said there was a technical issue with the system called AeroData, which determines whether flights can take off.

The airlines impacted included Southwest, Delta, American, JetBlue, Alaska and United airlines.

The airlines said the the system-wide outages caused delays locally and across the country.

There has been no estimate for when things will return to normal.

Locally, flights out of BWI were affected. Delays were reported in Chicago, New York, Boston, Atlanta, Miami and Detroit.

Southwest Airlines told 海角精品黑料 it implemented an internal ground stop for 40 minutes “during an outage with a vendor that services multiple carriers with data used in flight planning.”

Southwest lifted the ground stop at 7:05 a.m. but some flights are still delayed.

Airlines say travelers should check their websites for the latest updates on flights.

Travelers at BWI told 海角精品黑料 their delayed flights weren’t a big deal. One flyer who only provided her first name, Nancy, said she brought books to pass the time.

“It doesn’t bother me. I fly a lot and I’ve flown lots of long-haul distances,” she said while waiting for a delayed flight to Ohio.

Mary Erickson, a traveler whose business trip flight was delayed, heard about the delays on 海角精品黑料-FM while driving to the airport.

“It’s just a business trip so I’m mentally thinking, ‘OK, what meetings do I have to rearrange?'” Erickson said.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says the issue has to do with the snowsuits’ metal snaps, which can detach and pose a choking hazard to young children.

The girls’ snowsuits were sold in infant sizes 0 to 18 months in stores and online from August through November 2018.

There is only one report of a metal snap detaching and there have been no reports of injuries.

The CPSC says consumers should immediately take the recalled snowsuits away from their infants and children and return them to The Children’s Place for a full refund.

Online customers will receive instructions from the store on how they can obtain a full refund.

There are Children’s Place stores in Arlington, Prince George’s County, Wheaton, Potomac, Oxon Hill, Springfield, Fairfax and Gaithersburg.
