Police: Juvenile shouting false active-shooter warning sparked panic in Ballston Quarter mall /arlington/2019/09/reports-of-possible-shooting-at-ballston-quarter-mall/ /arlington/2019/09/reports-of-possible-shooting-at-ballston-quarter-mall/#respond Sun, 15 Sep 2019 02:50:11 +0000 /?p=20170299&preview=true&preview_id=20170299 Police said they have found no evidence of a shooting at Ballston Quarter in Arlington, Virginia, after initial reports prompted a panic at the mall.

Arlington County police said that officers responded to a report of a possible shooting inside the mall’s movie theater at around 8:42 p.m. on Saturday.

A preliminary search of the Regal Cinemas movie theater and its surrounding area did not uncover any evidence of a shooting, police said.

An investigation showed that a juvenile male entered a movie theater playing “It: Chapter Two” and shouted a warning about an active shooter. Movie patrons fled the theater and began calling 911. Word of an active shooter spread around all of Ballston Quarter and more people began self-evacuating.

Police have not yet found, nor identified the juvenile who sparked the panic.

All individuals who sheltered in place were evacuated.

One individual sustained minor injuries while self-evacuating and was transported to a local area hospital. No other injuries have been reported, police said.

As fears over the possibility of a shooting dissipated, many continued to eat and drink inside restaurants and bars in the area.

Police spokeswoman Ashley Savage said police searched and cleared the whole mall, not just the theater, as a precaution.

Maryland officers turn car’s passenger seat into roadside delivery room /prince-georges-county/2019/08/maryland-officers-turn-cars-passenger-seat-into-roadside-delivery-room/ /prince-georges-county/2019/08/maryland-officers-turn-cars-passenger-seat-into-roadside-delivery-room/#respond Mon, 19 Aug 2019 00:27:00 +0000 /?p=20065044 It was one of the more unusual calls for a group of Laurel, Maryland, police officers who on Friday evening had to turn a car’s passenger seat into an impromptu delivery room.

Officer Shermon Willis was on patrol that evening when the driver of a Nissan Rouge flagged him down shortly before 8 p.m. at the intersection of Van Dusen Road and Maryland 198 in Laurel.

The driver explained to the officer that his pregnant wife, seated in the passenger seat, was in labor and needed help. Willis called for an ambulance, while Pfc. James Bright, who overheard the call, headed to the scene to assist, the Laurel Police Department said.

Bright, a volunteer EMT, determined that there was no time left to escort the couple to a D.C. hospital, something the father-to-be had suggested.

Giving the impending birth, Cpl. Juan Diaz-Chavarria garbed supplies from his cruiser’s first aid kit and the officers turned the couple’s car into a roadside delivery room.

Bright coached the mother through the process, and after a few more minutes of labor, he delivered a healthy baby girl, police said.

The Laurel Volunteer Fire Department later arrived and helped cut the umbilical cord. Police said that mother and child were then transported to a hospital for routine aftercare.

With a win against the team from Coon Rapids, Minnesota, Loudoun South would advance to the semifinal of the U.S. bracket.

The team from South Riding will hope for another dominating pitching performance when it faces off against Minnesota at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Justin Lee, Liam Thyen and Chase Obstgarten threw a combined no-hitter in Loudoun South’s 3-0 win over Rhode Island on Friday.

Minnesota held off Kentucky 2-1 in its opener.

While the winner of Sunday’s game advances, the losing squad will not be automatically eliminated.

The team rather moves to the losers bracket, where it will face either Rhode Island or Louisiana for a chance to keep its title hopes alive.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said that its agents arrested Richard D. Clayton of Winter Park, Florida, for written threats to kill or do bodily harm.

The arrest was the result of a joint investigation by the FDLE, FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Winter Park Police Department, according to a news release. The authorities launched their joint investigation on Tuesday after the suspect posted a threatening message to Facebook.

鈥3 more days of probation left then I get my AR-15 back. Don鈥檛 go to Walmart next week,” Clayton wrote on Aug. 6.

The online threat came only days after 31 people were killed in two mass shootings in Texas and Ohio last weekend. One of those shootings, which left 22 people dead, occurred at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on Aug. 4.

Investigators said that Clayton appears to believe in white supremacist ideology and has a history of posting threatening messages to social media using fake accounts.

Fairfax County police said that the crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. near the intersection of Shreve Road and Hickory Street.

According to preliminary findings, the victim, identified as 60-year-old Betty Ana Bernstein-Zabza of Falls Church, was walking with a juvenile northbound on a pedestrian pathway next to Shreve Road. Both were struck as they entered a crosswalk that connects the pathway to a sidewalk.

Detectives believe that David Alan Francis, 46, of South Riding, Virginia, lost control of a stolen 2013 Nissan Titan pickup truck causing him to leave the roadway and hit both pedestrians.

Bernstein-Zabza was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. The juvenile was treated for minor injuries.

Police arrested Francis, who fled the scene, after a short pursuit. The 46-year-old was charged with one count of felony hit and run, and detectives believe both speed and drugs contributed to the crash.

Francis is currently being held without bond at the Fairfax County jail. Police suspect that Francis may have been involved in additional criminal events on Saturday.

Storms bring down trees, knock out power and expected to hinder Monday’s MARC service /weather-news/2019/07/dangerous-heat-grips-dc-with-another-day-near-100-degrees/ /weather-news/2019/07/dangerous-heat-grips-dc-with-another-day-near-100-degrees/#respond Mon, 22 Jul 2019 03:55:28 +0000 /?p=19956755 After another scorching day in the D.C. area, strong evening storms brought down trees and left thousands of people without power.

Thunderstorms with wind gusts of up to 60 mph caused havoc around the region, with trees falling on houses and across roadways. Heavy rainfall also flooded several streets in the 海角精品黑料 listening area.

There are no reports of injuries.

Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, said in a Twitter post that all train traffic has been stopped after a tree fell across railroad tracks north of the Garrett Park MARC station.

Due to the downed tree, MARC’s Brunswick line will be impacted for the Monday morning commute. The rail service suggested that passengers consider alternate modes of transit if they usually enlist the service for their morning travel. Expect “major delays and train cancellations,” the rail service wrote in an early morning tweet.

The storms also knocked out power for thousands of customers in the area.

Pepco reported that close to 3,000 customers are without power as of 11:55 p.m., but by 4 a.m. Monday, that number had been reduced to about 700, mostly in Montgomery County.

In Northern Virginia, while at one point over 4,700 customers were in the dark, only about 1,000 remain without power, according to Dominion Energy. Most of those customers are in Loudoun County, just outside of Leesburg.

NOVEC reported 80 affected customers, while BGE is working on restoring power to just over 2,000 customers.

Out of the frying pan, into the flood

As if getting through this scorching heat weren’t enough, the area will also have to contend with flood chances at the beginning of the workweek. Thankfully, temperatures will be more tolerable.

DC police arrest suspect in shooting death of 11-year-old boy /dc/2019/07/11-year-old-boy-shot-and-killed-in-southeast-dc/ /dc/2019/07/11-year-old-boy-shot-and-killed-in-southeast-dc/#respond Sun, 21 Jul 2019 03:00:03 +0000 /?p=19948936 Police have arrested a suspect in the shooting death of 11-year-old Karon Brown.

D.C. police on Saturday arrested 29-year-old Tony Antoine McClam of Southeast D.C. He was charged with second degree murder while armed.

Police thanked the community for their assistance in the arrest by providing multiple tips in the case.

“Guns do indeed kill people,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said at a press conference. “Guns in the hands of the wrong people are deadly and make our neighborhoods unsafe. We can not wait for another child to fall victim to senseless gun violence.”

Brown was killed Thursday night after he was shot in Southeast D.C.

Just before 7 p.m., D.C. police responded to reports of gunshots in the 2700 block of Naylor Road Southeast. Initially, police had said the location was the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue Southeast.

No victims were found on the scene, but police soon received notice from Prince George’s County Fire/EMS that an 11-year-old boy with gunshot wounds was being transported to a hospital.

Brown was driven to a fire station in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and then transferred to a children’s hospital. Brown later died.

An initial investigation revealed Brown was inside a car at the time of the shooting. The shooting broke out during a dispute between at least five people. As the dispute escalated, several shots were fired into the car where the Brown was seated, striking him.

Assistant Chief Robert Contee with D.C. police called the incident a “targeted shooting,” meaning shots were intentionally fired into the vehicle.

It is unclear who specifically was targeted inside the vehicle, or Brown’s relation to the person who drove him to the fire station.

Contee shared a description of the suspected shooter: a black man between 20 and 30 years old, of medium, stocky build, and a medium complexion. At the time of the shooting, the suspect was wearing black pants and no shirt.

The other suspects are said to be young men or boys, and may range in age from 10 or 11 years old to their early 30s.

On Friday, back in the neighborhood of the shooting, resident Sharon Wise told 海角精品黑料, “We keep trying to stop this same type of thing from happening.”

For Mildred King, what took place hit close to home. She said her grandson was murdered last year, and she wanted to see the violence come to an end.

“We need to find out what we can do to calm, to stop this killing, because it’s really getting serious — it’s so much that you can’t pump gas no more,” King said.

Also in the area was George Chapman, with local group Stop the Killing, which he said aims to bring the community together by bringing to an end what he called a lack of respect for others.

Police cadets were handing out flyers in the area Friday, with the hopes of getting tips in the case.

Mayor Bowser urged residents Thursday to come forward with information about the shooting, “so we can take a killer off the streets.” She reiterated that the victim was a child, and that other children were in the area during the shooting.

“Our communities have to stand up and speak up, and make sure anyone who knows anything about this brazen homicide is brought to justice,” Bowser said.

On Friday evening, Bowser’s office announced an increase in reward money for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of a person or people responsible for the D.C. homicide.

D.C. police initially offered up to $25,000, and other agencies added to the reward: $15,000 from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and $10,000 from the FBI’s Washington Field Office.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting or suspicious activity in the area just before 7 p.m. is asked to call (202) 727-9099, or send an anonymous text to 50411.

Severe thunderstorms hit DC area as heat wave continues /weather-news/2019/07/dc-area-continues-to-sizzle-under-excessive-heat-warning/ /weather-news/2019/07/dc-area-continues-to-sizzle-under-excessive-heat-warning/#respond Sun, 21 Jul 2019 02:15:12 +0000 /?p=19954184 The D.C. area will continue to sizzle through the weekend as temperatures barrel toward 100 degrees. After another scorching hot day, severe thunderstorms are rolling through the listening area on Saturday night.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings

  • There are currently no severe thunderstorm warnings in effect across the 海角精品黑料 listening area.

The heat index, a combination of heat and humidity that impacts how hot it feels, will reach 110 to 115 degrees. The dangerous heat is expected to continue through Sunday.

These extreme temperatures could cause heat-related illnesses. Meteorologists advise people stay in air-conditioned areas if possible, and to check on neighbors, relatives and pets. When outside, stay in the shade and stay hydrated.

“Please take this seriously as heat illness such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke are hazards for everyone, so practice heat safety,” StormTeam 4 meteorologist Steve Prinzivalli said.

People are escaping the heat in fountains all over the country as a heat wave barrels across the U.S. (海角精品黑料/Steve Dresner)

Prinzivalli recommends wearing light-colored and lightweight clothing, and avoiding strenuous exercise. Never leave anyone, including children, or pets in parked cars.

While Sunday promises more sizzling temperatures, an approaching cold front may bring thunderstorms later in the day. Highs will finally fall back to the 90s on Monday.

Signs of heat illnesses

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has聽 for the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Heat exhaustion

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Cold, pale, clammy skin
  • Heavy sweating
  • Fainting

Under those circumstances you should move to a cooler location, loosen your clothes, lie down, apply wet,聽cool cloth to as much of your body as possible and sip water. If you continue to vomit, seek medical help right away.

Heat stroke

  • Body temperature above 103 degrees
  • Hot, red, dry or moist skin
  • Fast and strong pulse
  • Possible unconsciousness

If you suspect heat stroke, call 911. Do not give fluids to someone experiencing heat stroke symptoms. Move the person to a cooler location and try to lower their body temperature using cool cloths or a bath.

Muscle cramping might be the first sign of , the CDC advises.

Keeping pets safe

If you must take your dog out for a walk, it’s important to remember that unlike those of us who are wearing shoes, your furry friends will feel the brunt of hot concrete or asphalt on their paws. StormTeam4’s Lauryn Ricketts posted this tweet showing how hot sidewalks or roads will get when it’s over 95 degrees out.

Cooling centers

Here are some information on cooling centers in your area.

DC

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Tuesday that the D.C. Heat Emergency Plan has been activated. This goes into effect when the heat index passes 95. Cooling centers for residents and the homeless are open from noon to 6 p.m., with some outdoor pools, splash parks and shelters open later.听

How work crews beat the heat to repair flash flooding damage in Virginia /virginia/2019/07/how-work-crews-beat-the-heat-to-repair-flash-flooding-damage-in-virginia/ /virginia/2019/07/how-work-crews-beat-the-heat-to-repair-flash-flooding-damage-in-virginia/#respond Sun, 21 Jul 2019 00:07:18 +0000 /?p=19955416 With the heat index reaching triple digits this week in the D.C. area, Virginia’s road crews are using an old Army trick to stay cool.

Crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation on Friday worked to reopen Prosperity Avenue and repair damage on Morningside Drive in Fairfax County.

Both roads sustained damage in the July 8 flash flooding, Ellen Kamilakis, VDOT spokesperson, told 海角精品黑料.

As crews put asphalt down on Prosperity Avenue, Kamilakis’ temperature gun showed road temperatures surpassing 240 degrees.

She said workers took a lot of water and shade breaks, and stayed well fed to battle the heat.

But the crews had an additional trick up their sleeves: arm immersion.

“We’ve got two coolers filled with ice and then you put some water in them, and you basically submerge your arm from the elbow forward,” Kamilakis said.

The tip for arm immersion came from a retired Army veteran who now works at VDOT.

Kamilakis, who tried the technique herself, said: “It works, you wouldn’t believe.”

VDOT’s flood repair strike team, which was made up of department workers from all around Fairfax County, completed the work on both roads around 1 p.m.

Residents of Potomac neighborhood relieved as Belfast Road reopens following washout /montgomery-county/2019/07/residents-of-potomac-md-neighborhood-relieved-as-belfast-road-reopens-following-washout/ /montgomery-county/2019/07/residents-of-potomac-md-neighborhood-relieved-as-belfast-road-reopens-following-washout/#respond Mon, 15 Jul 2019 01:44:31 +0000 /?p=19930914 Residents of a Potomac, Maryland, neighborhood cut off for nearly a week after flooding washed away parts of the only access road are once again able to drive to and from their homes.

Monday’s torrential rainfalls wiped out a large section of Belfast Road, leaving more than 70 families unable to access their homes, Montgomery County said in a news release. For the past week, residents relied on shuttle buses to get in and out of their neighborhood.

Workers from the Montgomery County Department of Transportation worked tirelessly to fix the road, and following several days of infrastructure work, including the use of large amounts of gravel, Belfast Road reopened Sunday morning.

Residents affected by the road closure commended the department for its quick response.

“They’ve been great. They got it fixed as quickly as possible, and they had a shuttle running for us. So it wasn’t that big of an inconvenience, given the magnitude of what happened,” resident Rich Gale told 海角精品黑料.

More work is needed, including paving the road, but 海角精品黑料’s Mike Murillo reported those measures do not require a further closure of Belfast Road.

Remnants of the flooding remain, but the fixing of broken pipes and lots of fill dirt and gravel has the road passable again. (海角精品黑料/Mike Murillo)
