DC鈥檚 new fitness craze? Hyrox combines endurance, strength and grit /health-fitness/2025/09/dcs-new-fitness-craze-hyrox-combines-endurance-strength-and-grit/ Mon, 15 Sep 2025 09:08:00 +0000 /?p=27915785 This video is no longer available.

Dubbed the “World Series” of fitness racing, Hyrox is fast becoming one of the more popular ways to stay in shape with training for the race popping up all over the D.C. area.

is a global indoor fitness competition with the event 鈥 drawing more than 4,300 athletes to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center last March. It combines running and eight functional workouts in a standardized format. Each running portion of a kilometer is followed by a different exercise, including SkiErg, sled push and pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer’s carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls.

So why has it been gaining popularity in the fitness world?

The hype surrounding Hyrox

“Number one, it’s fun,” said Graham King, owner of Urban Athletic Club in Shaw. “The movements aren’t so high skill based so we are looking at sled pushes, wall balls and lunges and half the event is running, so if you can run you are halfway done.”

“Also, because the event is confined, your friends can cheer you on at every single station,” King added. “With Hyrox you are running around this track and everyone can see you. You go to your wall ball, you go to your rowing and your friends and family are cheering you on the whole time.”

is one of many clubs in the D.C. area that holds Hyrox training classes and it offers athletes an alternative way to get and stay motivated. “It’s just the movements and it keeps my body oiled up,” said Urban Athletic Club member Tim Rutherford. “I feel like I am able to push myself more than I can with strict weight lifting.”

“I like the variety and I appreciate workouts where I work most of my body,” said Chad Russell, who also attends Urban Athletic Club. “If there is a moment in the workout where I hate my life but it doesn’t continue within 20 minutes of the workout, it was a perfect workout.”

Collectively getting better

Olga Gorodetsky is a coach at Urban Athletic Club and she is a fan of how training for Hyrox brings people together. “It really isn’t about top-ticking the other person. This really feels like a team-oriented community and it’s all about us collectively getting better,” Gorodetsky said. “I love Hyrox.”

Hyrox is open to all ages and levels and the setup is eight kilometers of running with eight workout stations.

Dhiraj Jagasia, 45, of Great Falls, Virginia, competed in the event last March in D.C. It was a 10 out 10, Jagasia said.

“I got my family out there and my friends cheering me on. It was top notch,” he said.

Jagasia said he did the Hyrox race to help him with other sports.

“I am an avid tennis player, and I moved up in the rankings, so I wanted to hang with the younger guys,” Jagasia said. “No matter what your goals are, this is something you can get better in terms of your overall health, your conditioning, and it will just help you live longer, I think.”

Clearly endurance is a huge part of Hyrox, so monthslong training is vital to any sort of success.

“I think the number one reason a lot of people, when it comes to fitness, may fail or give up, is they try to do it alone,” said Branden Jones, a D.C.-based trainer.

“It’s one of the things you really can’t do alone. You need some accountability, some community and that’s the best way to get this thing done.”

Another Hyrox race , early in 2026.

‘Pickleball is here to stay’: The sports craze taking over the DC region /other-sports/2025/06/pickleball-is-here-to-stay-the-sports-craze-taking-over-the-dc-region/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 09:18:36 +0000 /?p=27486651&preview=true&preview_id=27486651 This video is no longer available.

It鈥檚 the sport that鈥檚 sweeping the nation, and there appears to be no slowing it down as pickleball can be seen and heard at parks all over the D.C. area.

Spurred by the pandemic and people seeking a socially distant activity, the paddle game played on a court smaller than a tennis court has exploded in popularity.

鈥淎nyone can play, it doesn鈥檛 matter your age, your ability 鈥 you will have fun,鈥 said Cori Lathan, a regular player at Capitol View-Homewood Park in Kensington, Maryland.

Jeaneen White coaches pickleball in the Takoma neighborhood of D.C. and sees it as a sport all ages can play.

鈥淔rom my 13-year-old son to my 80-year-old friend, I love that it brings ages together to do something that is good for your health,鈥 White said.

With its soaring popularity, the indoor pickleball game has become big business as well, with several facilities popping up all over the District.

鈥淚t鈥檚 social and competitive, it鈥檚 a community,鈥 said Cristin Caine, who coaches at Dill Dinkers in North Bethesda. 鈥淚 think people love that they can just show up to open plays and not have to text a million people to see if they can play, and you don鈥檛 have to worry about the weather.鈥

The sport that shares court space with tennis is also sharing shelf space at stores that were once tennis specific.

Tennis Topia’s owner, Marco Impeduglia, saw the change coming about two-and-a-half years ago at his Rockville, Maryland, store and quickly made the adjustments.

鈥淧ickleball was starting to blow the tennis world out of the water, and that鈥檚 when I realized there was a lot of demand for pickleball paddles, shoes and gear,鈥 Impeduglia said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been a big hit ever since.”

This video is no longer available.

Impeduglia doesn’t see the trend ending anytime soon.

鈥淲e are about five years into the pickleball wave and it鈥檚 been growing every day, every week, every month,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just easy to find now an outdoor pickleball court, either blended line or dedicated, especially in the DMV area and it鈥檚 really easy to start playing.鈥

Fourteen-year-old Dylan Salzman started playing pickleball recently, but is moving up the ranks fast, capturing Montgomery County鈥檚 first ever open division championship in doubles for Northwest High School last fall.

Salzman鈥檚 goals with his newfound sport: 鈥淢aybe get recognized, possibly to go pro, because I think it鈥檚 a really good sport and I think I am not bad at it. So I think if I get a shot, I won鈥檛 waste it,鈥 he said, in reference to Major League Pickleball, which was formed in 2021.

鈥淧ickleball is here to stay,鈥 Lathan said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be an Olympic sport, I am sure of it.鈥

The Commanders couldn鈥檛 overcome four costly turnovers and Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who rushed for three touchdowns including a 60-yard touchdown scamper on Philadelphia鈥檚 first play from scrimmage.

Eagles QB Jaylen Hurts also rushed for three touchdowns and threw for a touchdown to lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl for the second time in three years.

The Eagles will play either the Buffalo Bills or former Eagles coach Andy Reid鈥檚 Kansas City Chiefs.

Washington rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels had a touchdown throw and run for the Commanders. He fell short in his bid to become the first rookie quarterback to lead his team to the Super Bowl.

Eagles beat Rams and will face Commanders next Sunday /nfl/2025/01/eagles-beat-rams-and-will-face-commanders-next-sunday/ Sun, 19 Jan 2025 23:19:03 +0000 /?p=26901175 Standing in the way of the Washington Commanders for a trip to the Super Bowl is NFC East foe Philadelphia.

The Eagles knocked out the Los Angeles Rams 28-22 at a snowy Lincoln Financial Field.

The Eagles advanced to the NFC Championship Game and will host the Commanders next Sunday at 3 p.m. The Commanders are in their first NFC title game since 1992, the year they won their last Super Bowl.

The Commanders split their season matchup with Philadelphia.

鈥淭he elements was great, but the atmosphere was even better,鈥 Barkley said. 鈥淥ur fans were amazing. That was a close one, but that鈥檚 playoff football. And at the end of the day, we got the job done.鈥

The Rams kept the upset threat alive 鈥 caused in large part by two missed extra points by Philadelphia’s Jake Elliott.

Matthew Stafford, who threw for 324 yards, kept the Rams in it with a 4-yard TD pass to Colby Parkinson that made it 28-22. The Rams got the ball back with two minutes left and Stafford completed consecutive passes of 11 and 37 yards to move the ball into Eagles鈥 territory.

But Stafford was sacked by Jalen Carter on third down and threw an incomplete pass on fourth down to end the threat.

The Eagles are set to host the NFC championship game for the fifth time since Lincoln Financial Field opened in 2003.

Eagles defenders frolicked in the winter mess and made snow angels in the end zone to celebrate the turnovers. Some brave frigid fans went shirtless 鈥 and yes, even Santa Claus was in the house, without a report of any snowball throwing.

Stadium workers used snow blowers to clear yard lines and hash marks, while Eagles scooped and kicked away snow to clear a circle for Elliott鈥檚 field goal attempts.

Hurts threw for just 128 yards, his mobility hampered in the second half after he was fitted for a knee brace. He didn鈥檛 miss any snaps, but was easily mauled on the safety. He was sacked seven times.

Hurts suffered a concussion that cost him in two games in a loss at Washington in December. It was the Eagles鈥 only loss after they returned from the bye with a 2-2 record.

鈥淚t comes through Philly. That means everything for this city, this team, and we鈥檝e got everything we want in front of us,鈥 Hurts said.

Barkley had 118 total yards at the break, but the Rams’ defense — coming off a nine-sack effort against Minnesota — sacked Hurts three times in the half. Hurts was sacked on consecutive plays to end the first half, a total loss of 16 yards that knocked the Eagles out of field goal range.

The Eagles borrowed from the playbook used in their November win in Los Angeles when big plays 鈥 Barkley had touchdown runs of 70 and 72 yards 鈥 helped them cruise to a comfortable win.

Hurts rushed for the longest TD of his career, a 44-yarder on the fifth play of the game that sent a cold crowd still buzzing from the pregame theatrics into a frenzy. Elliott missed an extra point for the second straight playoff game.

After converting a fourth down on the drive, Stafford hit Tyler Higbee for a 4-yard TD that made it 7-6. Only six days earlier, Higbee spit up blood in the playoff win over Minnesota and was taken to the hospital with a chest injury.

Barkley scored on a 62-yard run for a 13-7 lead, but not before the 2,105-yard rusher slowed near the end zone and looked back to clown the trailing Jalen Verse. Barkley had has fifth touchdown run of 50-plus yards of the season and was the first player with three TD runs of 60-plus against one team since Baltimore鈥檚 Jamal Lewis did it against the Browns in 2003.

Verse got trolled by Barkley after the Rams rookie linebacker and Pennsylvania native said he 鈥渉ates Eagles fans.鈥 The first-round draft pick attended high school in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, which is about 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Verse egged on fans during pregame warmups and relished the boos that rained him on in the light snow. Once the game started, the Eagles showed on the big screen Verse on the bench and fans booed again.

Verse winked at the camera, stamping his name on the list of Philly sports villains.

Joshua Karty kicked two field goals in the first half for the Rams.

Elliott atoned for a missed extra point with a 44-yard field goal that floated through the uprights for a 16-13 lead in the third.

Jayden Daniels leads Commanders to first playoff win in nearly 7,000 days, 23-20 over the Buccaneers /washington-commanders/2025/01/commanders-top-buccaneers-for-nfc-wild-card-win/ Mon, 13 Jan 2025 09:18:08 +0000 /?p=26874657 Can an entire team come in clutch? The answer is: Yes.

The Washington Commanders won once again with another late-game scoring drive, earning a dramatic 23-20 victory over the Buccaneers in Tampa in an NFC Wild Card playoff game.

Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels threw for two touchdowns and led the final drive setting up a game-winning 36-yard field goal by Zane Gonzalez on Sunday night.

The Commanders picked up the team鈥檚 first playoff win in 19 years and now advance to face the Lions in Detroit on Saturday at 8 p.m. in the divisional round.

Daniels, playing with a bandage beneath his right eye after his face was bloodied, became the third rookie quarterback in three years to win a playoff game.

鈥淚t means a lot, man,鈥 Daniels said. 鈥淵ou could just see all the fans over here, man, they鈥檙e waiting for us. They鈥檝e waited a long time for this moment and this feeling, so I鈥檓 just so happy for them.鈥

Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers (10-8) missed several opportunities and the veteran quarterback committed a critical turnover in the fourth quarter. The Bucs couldn鈥檛 gain 1 yard on two tries from the Commanders 12-yard line and settled for a field goal to tie the game before Washington鈥檚 winning drive.

The Buccaneers opened the season with a 37-20 victory at home against the Commanders in Daniels鈥 first game. Daniels went on to have an outstanding season, was selected to the Pro Bowl and helped Washington improve from 4-13 to 12-5.

Now, he has them headed to Detroit to face Jared Goff and the Lions鈥 high-octane offense.

After Tampa Bay鈥檚 defense held inside the 5 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to preserve a 17-13 lead, Mayfield gave the Commanders the ball right back when he fumbled an exchange on a handoff to Jalen McMillan. Washington recovered at the Buccaneers 13. On fourth-and-2 from the 5, Daniels connected with Terry McLaurin in the back of the end zone for a 20-17 lead.

Mayfield drove the Buccaneers to a second-and-1 at the Commanders 12 but they settled for a 32-yard field goal by Chase McLaughlin that tied it at 20-20 with 4:41 left.

The Bucs never got the ball back, thanks to Daniels, who calmly led his team downfield. With less than a minute left, he was hit behind the line of scrimmage but scrambled for 4 yards on third-and-2, allowing him to take a knee to set up Gonzalez’s winning kick.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn previously passed up short field goals on fourth down twice and the offense failed to convert before McLaurin鈥檚 touchdown catch.

On fourth down from the Buccaneers 4 less than a minute into the fourth quarter, Daniels threw incomplete. He was pressured and threw incomplete on fourth-and-2 from Tampa Bay鈥檚 20 on Washington鈥檚 first possession of the game.

Mayfield tossed a 4-yard TD pass to Bucky Irving to give the Buccaneers a 17-13 lead in the third quarter. On the previous play, 350-pound defensive tackle Vita Vea was Mayfield鈥檚 intended receiver, but the quarterback got sacked for a 2-yard loss.

Mayfield fired a 1-yard TD pass to Mike Evans to tie it at 10 late in the first half.

Gonzalez kicked a 22-yard field goal to give Washington a 13-10 lead on the opening drive of the second half. The Commanders had a first down at the 3 but Tampa Bay鈥檚 defense held.

After Austin Ekeler ran 2 yards on fourth-and-1 from the Buccaneers 23 late in the first quarter, the Commanders went ahead a few plays later to complete a 92-yard drive. Daniels, with his face bloodied, tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Dyami Brown for a 7-3 lead.

A holding call on cornerback Zyon McCollum negated a third-down sack by Yaya Diaby and allowed Washington to extend its next drive that ended with Gonzalez nailing a 50-yarder for a 10-3 lead.

McLaughlin kicked a 50-yard field goal on the opening drive. The Buccaneers were 9-1 when they scored first in the regular season.

Washington Commanders clinch playoff berth by beating Falcons in OT /washington-commanders/2024/12/commanders-clinch-playoff-berth-with-win-over-falcons/ Mon, 30 Dec 2024 14:25:45 +0000 /?p=26821340 The Washington Commanders have clinched a playoff berth after beating Atlanta 30-24 in overtime at Northwest Stadium.

Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels provided the heroics once again for Washington on Sunday with a 12-play, 70-yard drive capped off by a touchdown pass to tight end Zach Ertz.

The Commanders clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2020; their first round opponent has yet to be determined.

The Commanders (11-5) could move up to the sixth seed in the NFC and set up a wild-card round game at Tampa Bay or the Los Angeles Rams if they win their regular-season finale at Dallas next weekend. They otherwise would be seventh and visit division-rival Philadelphia, unless Green Bay loses to Chicago.

Daniels ran for a season-high 127 yards, including 42 in OT, and completed 24 of 36 passes for 227 yards. He had two touchdown passes to Ertz and another to Olamide Zaccheaus to make the playoffs in his rookie year.

Atlanta was in control for the first half of the game, gashing Washington鈥檚 defense with the running game until abandoning it. Bijan Robinson had 82 yards and two touchdown runs on 13 carries until a minute was left in the second quarter 鈥 but had just 8 yards the rest of the way.

Michael Penix Jr. did his best to try to carry the Falcons back after they fell behind 24-17 late. The eighth pick in the draft made his second professional start and finished a 12-play, 68-yard drive with a touchdown pass to Kyle Pitts to tie it with 1:19 left.

A throw from Penix to Drake London drew a pass interference penalty with 2 seconds left in regulation and gave Riley Patterson a chance at a go-ahead field goal. But Patterson’s 56-yard attempt fell short as time expired and Atlanta never got the ball back.

Safety Reaves celebrates win with engagement

Washington Commanders safety Jeremy Reaves celebrated two major accomplishments on the field Sunday night, clinching a playoff spot and proposing to longtime girlfriend Mikaela Worley.

Reaves considered proposing last week but decided to make the move after giving Worley鈥檚 family a heads up.

Reaves is one of Washington鈥檚 few players left from the organization鈥檚 most recent playoff game in the 2020 season.

James Madison (11-1) is headed to the Armed Forces Bowl to face the Air Force on Dec. 23 in Fort Worth, Texas, with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. James Madison has been ranked in the Top 25 in every poll since Oct. 22 and started the season with 10 straight wins.

The Dukes will head to its first bowl game without coach Curt Cignetti, who resigned after agreeing to a deal to become the new head coach at Indiana. Offensive line coach Damian Wroblewski will be at the Armed Forces Bowl.

“Every member of our football program is honored and excited to represent JMU in its first ever bowl game,” Wroblewski . “We understand the unusual circumstances that we are in, and that only makes us smile even more.”

The Washington Commanders did just that, including a Sam Howell interception late that was returned for a touchdown to seal the New York Giants 31-19 win over the Commanders at FedEx Field.

The loss gives the Giants a season sweep of Washington, who fall to 4-7 on the season, leaving their postseason all but dashed.

Howell threw a touchdown pass, but was intercepted three times as the Giants saw their rookie QB Tommy DeVito throw for three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Moving on, the Commanders turn right around and visit 7-3 Dallas on Thanksgiving.
