Thunderstorms soak parts of DC area as heat wave holds its grip /weather-news/2024/07/on-the-heels-of-record-heat-more-high-temps-thunderstorms-on-the-horizon-for-dc-area/ Mon, 15 Jul 2024 20:58:59 +0000 /?p=26214472

Severe Thunderstorms passed though parts of the D.C. region Monday as residents faced yet another day of sweltering temperatures amid a record-breaking heat wave. Here’s what you need to know.

If you’re on a commute, or just traveling, keep the radio tuned to weather as the extreme storms, wind or flash flooding can appear suddenly.

As a system moved through the area, Severe Thunderstorm Warnings popped up throughout the D.C. area. The National Weather Service warned that storms in Loudoun and Fairfax counties in Virginia as well as those in Montgomery County, Maryland, could bring winds up to 60 mph.

Moving in and out within minutes, at 5:50 p.m. Monday, winds from fast moving storms passing by 海角精品黑料 studios in Friendship Heights, Md., knocked the tops off trees and scattering debris into the roadway.

7News First Alert meteorologist Veronica Johnson said multiple trees were reported down in the District, as well as downed trees, debris and a handful of power outages in Fairfax and Loudoun counties in Virginia.

More isolated storms could be happen Monday evening, but Johnson said the worst for the day was over

“We are done with the severe weather here this evening,” Johnson said. “But it really will be a rinse and repeat kind of day for us tomorrow where storms will come in during the afternoon heating of the day and could bring some high winds.”

“So rinse and repeat for us tomorrow,” she added. “We’ve got temperatures here this evening, about 89 to 93 degrees, then tonight about 70 to 79. It’s going to be warm and humid start but no rain expected in the morning.”

Halfway through July, the D.C. area continues to deal with searing temperatures, as the National Weather Service has also issued an Excessive Heat Warning for most of Monday’s daylight hours.

Temperatures on Monday afternoon were around 100 throughout much of the D.C. area. Heat index values were expected to reach closer to 110, according to 7News First Alert meteorologist Mark Pe帽a.

Feels-like temperatures are expected to drop into the 80s on Monday night.

Tuesday will be another scorching day. In a similar pattern to other days during the heat wave, an Excessive Heat Warning will go into from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening, according to the weather service.

“This little stretch here should go down on the books from what I can tell as one of our more intense heat waves in the metro area,” 7News First Alert Senior Meteorologist Brian van de Graaff

Duration wise, the longest heat wave the D.C. region has experienced were 21-day stretches of temperatures above 90 in 1980 and 1988, according to van de Graff.

The record temperature for July 15 of 100 was set in 1988, according to van de Graaff.

A cool-down expected at the end of the week could prevent those records from being broken.

The hot weather is a result of a dome of high pressure which is parked in the Southeast U.S.聽鈥淚t just steers that heat right in here and it doesn’t really allow much in the way of cooling showers or storms to come in and give us a little bit of relief,鈥 van de Graaf said.

Much of the D.C. area is under a Monday as well, meaning it is possibly unhealthy for certain sensitive groups 鈥 such as children, the elderly, or those suffering from heart disease, asthma or other lung diseases.

鈥淲hen we get this really stagnant hot air that’s not moving around much, the pollutants can kind of gather,鈥 van de Graaf said.

Fairfax County Public Schools canceled all outdoor activities on the district’s fields and courts from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., including recess, extracurricular activities, team practices and recreation programs and community use by other groups. Employees who work outside 鈥 including landscapers, groundskeepers and general facilities workers 鈥 must finish out their workdays indoors.

Ahead of Thursday鈥檚 forecast temperatures in the middle 80s there is more heat in store, including on Tuesday, for which the National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Watch.

On Sunday afternoon, record highs of 101 were recorded at Reagan National Airport in Virginia and BWI Marshall airport in Maryland, according to 海角精品黑料 meteorologist Mike Stinneford.

“The high of 99 at Dulles was also a record,” Stinneford said.

Though showers and thunderstorms are possible each day through the first half of the week, the weather service said the “best chance for organized severe weather looks to be on Wednesday.”

Beating the heat (and humidity)

The extreme heat and humidity in the early part of the week will increase the chance for heat-related illnesses, especially for those who will be outside.

The weather service recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or cool environments for those doing outdoor work, and wearing lightweight or loosefitting clothing and, of course, staying hydrated.

If possible, people are urged to limit outdoor activity to the early or late hours of the day to avoid the most intense heat.

Craving a unique frozen treat? Here鈥檚 the scoop on 14 supercool DC-area ice cream spots /food-restaurant/2024/07/craving-a-unique-frozen-treat-heres-the-scoop-on-14-supercool-dc-area-ice-cream-spots/ Sat, 06 Jul 2024 14:35:14 +0000 /?p=26183702 Mother Nature is turning up the temps, so of course, it’s about that time for us to all scream for ice cream. For foodies and lovers of culinary variety, though, it can be a rocky road to finding an ice cream treat or flavor that has yet to dazzle and delight your summertime taste buds.

Plain vanilla is so vanilla. A simple sugar cone is such the usual suspect. Where can you find the most innovative and tantalizing ice cream? Plenty of places in the D.C. area are serving up unique frozen treats 鈥 read on for the list of melty, mouthwatering options.

Rice Culture

Rice Culture, located in Vienna, Virginia, started as a pop-up tent at farmers markets across the D.C. area. It’s blossomed into a thriving brick-and-mortar offering a variety of Asian-inspired and highly Instagrammable frozen treats.

They serve up taiyaki ice cream, which originated in Japan 鈥 “essentially an ice cream cup with a fish-shaped waffle on top,” according to MikkiJo Bayawa, owner at .

Customers choose their soft serve flavor and their taiyaki filling: ube custard, vanilla, custard, pandan custard, red bean or Nutella. Their housemade soft serve flavors switch up periodically 鈥 new starting in July is Thai green tea, black sesame noir, peach oolong and watermelon basil sorbet.

On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, Rice Culture also offers the Filipino treat known as halo-halo: a shaved ice dessert with a variety of ingredients and your choice of soft serve on top.

“It鈥檚 a refreshing condensed milk flavored shaved ice dessert with layers of all sorts of ingredients for an end result that packs in lots of contrasting textures, from chewy to crunchy, creamy to sticky,” Bayawa said.

Goodies Frozen Custard and Treats

A little brick building in Alexandria, Virginia, is the home of , where proprietor Brandon Byrd serves up sweet treats based on the staple desserts of his childhood such as peach cobbler, banana pudding and pecan pie.

Born in Alabama with ties to Wisconsin, he wanted Goodies to bring “the Southern influence with Midwest feel” to this region.

鈥淔rozen custard is big in the Midwest,” Byrd said. “It’s not as big in the DMV.”

For many customers, he said Goodies provides a unique experience, and for himself, he says being able to have a piece of the Midwest on the East Coast is nostalgic.

Byrd said his most popular treat is the Boogie Woogie sundae, a turtle pecan sundae that’s been featured on The Food Network.

He said everything is delicious, but you can鈥檛 go wrong with any custardwich, particularly the rum cake option, which is a “vanilla bean frozen custard sandwiched between two slices of rum cake, with burnt caramel sauce.”

Byrd said that Goodies’ menu is deliberately small to prioritize quality over quantity. In fact, the only addition to the menu he鈥檚 made in recent years was a by-request-only banana pudding milkshake that was so delectable, his customers demanded it be a regular menu offering.

Cneacopia

, located inside the Rendezvous restaurant on Ninth Street in Northwest D.C., is a Black-owned, woman-owned business that puts its focus on the vehicle for the ice cream: the cone.

Plenty of residents of Prince George’s County, Maryland, will instantly know the flavor of one of the cones, just by name: Forestville vs. Iverson.

“It is the age-old debate of the DMV,” co-owner Avril Johnson said, referring to the snickerdoodles served up by the pound at Iverson Mall 鈥 where Stevie Wonder was recently spotted indulging in the famous sugar-and-cinnamon cookies 鈥 versus those sold at Forestville Mall, just a few miles away.

Johnson, whose sister Nanette is also a co-owner, said 颁艒苍别补肠辞辫颈补 has a few hidden gems: Bananarama, a banana fritter flavored cone that she said “takes customers by surprise”; MVP, a deconstructed chocolate chip cookie cone that “tastes like a chocolate chip cookie on the way down”; and their signature Cone Dust, which they don’t advertise on social media.

“Cone Dust is a crushed up version of every cone that we use as a topping,” Johnson said. “If a customer is torn between which cone flavor they’d like, they can use the Cone Dust to mix and match flavors.”

She said one of their most popular Cone Dusts is the Pink Panther flavor: salted strawberry cotton candy with Pop Rocks in it.

Malai

, which opened at 1407 T Street in Northwest D.C. this May, draws inspiration from South Asian ingredients and “unexpected twists on classic flavors.”

With its flagship store in Brooklyn, New York, Malai features ice cream that is “eggless, handcrafted, and churned with very little air, resulting in purer, more robust flavors, as well as the creamiest textures you can find,” according to its website, which lists both their dairy and nondairy flavor offerings.

Founder and CEO Pooja Bavishi said she never discriminates when it comes to Malai’s ice cream flavors, but there is a combo she waits for all year long: summer seasonal fig on fig, with coffee cardamom and orange fennel.

“There is something about how the different flavors and spices fit together that I truly crave and get excited about this time of year, every year,” Bavishi said.

Some flavors listed on the website are self-explanatory while others certainly require an explanation, such as “Madame Vice President.” Malai said the flavor celebrates Kamala Harris’ “glass ceiling shattering win as the first female VP of the U.S., “honoring her East and West Indian roots with coconut and mango as the ice cream base, with “jaggery candied lotus seeds” folded in as a nod to her first name, which means “lotus” in Sanskrit.

Can’t decide between going for ice cream or going for drinks? Why not both?

is a “barlour” in Northwest D.C. that offers spiked ice creams and sorbets 鈥 all with 5% alcohol content or less.

With flavors like strawberry white sangria sorbet and dark chocolate whiskey salted caramel ice cream, customers are “buzzing” about this shop, the first of its kind in the city.

海角精品黑料’s Matt Kaufax was among the first to try Tipsy Scoop out, after its grand opening earlier this year, and his recommendation is, emphatically, their vodka-infused raspberry limoncello sorbet.

“It’s refreshing like a raspberry lemonade,” Kaufax said. “Like a slushy beverage on a nice, hot summer’s day.”

Pasha Castle

Located on M Street in Georgetown, specializes in “authentic exotic sweets and irresistible Mediterranean treats.”

One such treat is their ashta ice cream, a traditional style of ice cream made from simmered milk that is heralded as soft and super creamy.

Crushed pistachio topping and color-changing spoons are some highlights of the content uploaded by ice cream enthusiasts to .

Ice Cream Jubilee

, with locations in Navy Yard, Georgetown and Ballston, has focused on clean, locally-sourced ingredients as well as whimsical and innovative flavors since opening up shop 10 years ago.

This month, the ice creamery introduced two new flavors for the peak of summer: blueberry crisp, wild blueberry jam mixed with vanilla ice cream and topped with cinnamon streusel; and peaches and cream, sweet summer peach jam churned with local cream.

“Some of our classic flavors are also hitting the spot right now,” Laura O’Shaughnessy, Ice Cream Jubilee’s chief marketing officer told 海角精品黑料. “I had Cookie Cookie Dough ice cream sandwich between two chocolate chip sea salt cookies recently and I can鈥檛 stop thinking about it.”

O’Shaughnessy said Ice Cream Jubilee is unique because it is local to the D.C. area 鈥 and gives back by donating 1% of sales to the communities around their shops.

The Dairy Godmother

The Dairy Godmother, located in Alexandria, Virginia, features a “flavor forecast” calendar .

A few of the flavors available throughout the month of July? On the 12th and 13th, there’s amaretto cherry chip: almond custard with cherry sauce and chocolate chips. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, try going the next week 鈥 on the 18th and 19th, there’s fizzy cotton candy, which is cotton candy custard with fizzy cotton candy pieces.

No matter what your ice cream flavor palate is like, The Dairy Godmother is sure to have an option for you to happily treat yourself to.

Mount Desert Island Ice Cream

If it’s important to you that your ice cream shop of choice make no more than five gallons at a time, may be the place for you.

Their D.C. store is located at 3110 Mt. Pleasant Street in Northwest, and the other five stores are located in Maine and Japan.

According to its website, Mount Desert Island was born in 2005 with a mission to provide never-seen-before flavors, which led to the creation of chocolate wasabi ice cream.

Some of the ice cream flavors featured on the website’s menu are blueberry sour cream crumble, butterbeer, and salmiakki, which is salt licorice.

Dolcezza Gelato

You’re likely to be familiar with , which, these days, can be found in many supermarket freezers. There are six shops in the D.C. area, including one at the Hirshhorn Museum and one in Fairfax’s Mosaic District.

Flavors like dulce de leche chip, blueberry lavender, and hazelnut crackle help maintain this shop’s status as an area favorite for frozen treats.

Moorenko’s

is a small ice cream shop with locations in downtown Silver Spring and Capitol Hill in D.C. Their focus is to create quality ice cream that’s also better for you than its rivals, nutritionally.

The shops offer fun ice cream flavors like Key lime pie, cotton candy gummy bear and blackberry chocolate chip. They also have sorbets to the tune of grapefruit campari, pineapple orange ginger and more. Don’t do dairy? They have a handful of vegan, plant-based options as well.

Salumeria 2703

is a deli with two locations in Northeast D.C. that sells more than sandwiches. Their beautiful artisanal gelato selection is made using organic local whole milk, natural flavors and fresh fruit.

Happy Ice Cream

Located on 17th Street in Northwest D.C., said they “only scoop outside” and “only when the weather is nice.” With flavors like tangelo and sheep’s milk ricotta chocochip, it may be worth checking out the scoop schedule on their website to ensure you can grab a cup or sourdough cone.

At a press conference late Saturday afternoon, Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz said the department has “promising leads” in the shooting that killed a man and wounded a child.

At approximately 11:20 a.m., officers responded to the school for a shooting and found a man in the bleachers suffering from a gunshot wound. Police said the man was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.

Aziz said the suspect and the victim were watching the football game when a dispute happened.

Police said the second victim, a 5-year-old child, was also found with a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect fled after the shooting, police said.

“Prince George鈥檚 County is a safe place to live. We have our challenges and we have our issues, but this is where it comes into play that community and police work together to resolve these issues,” Aziz said. “We can’t do anything without the intelligence and information of our greater community who want to see an end to senseless violence.”

Aziz said the department wants to “bring some resolution to an affected family on Father’s Day weekend.”

Montgomery Co. schools make ‘extraordinarily difficult’ budget cuts /montgomery-county/2024/06/montgomery-co-schools-make-extraordinarily-difficult-budget-cuts/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 01:36:01 +0000 /?p=26113351 The Montgomery County Board of Education adopted a $3.32 billion operating budget for fiscal year 2025 on Tuesday.

The acceptance of the budget left the school system with a $30 million deficit. The board voted Tuesday on several cuts in response to that deficit.

Montgomery County School Board President Karla Silvestre called for the vote, and parents angry over plans to eliminate the Montgomery Virtual Academy and increase class sizes shouted out, prompting pleas from Silvestre to restore order and continue with the meeting.

“I hope everybody knows that we would love to fund everything,” Montgomery County School Board member Rebecca Smondrowski told parents before voting.

Smondrowski said she shared parents’ concerns about cutting the virtual academy that allows 800 students to learn remotely. “It’s going to kill me to raise my hand (to vote),” Smondrowski said, to which someone responded from the crowd: “Don’t raise it! Stand up for us!”

Before the vote, board member Shebra Evans said there had been missteps in the budget process.

“I’m not happy with how we have to do this. It does not make me feel good,” Evans said.

‘No easy reductions to take’

According to a news release from the school system, “next year’s budget maintains essential services while including investments in key areas,” such as special education, mental health, language arts, the Community Schools program and the continuation of the two-year negotiated salary agreements between MCPS and its employee associations.

The approved budget’s reductions of over $30 million, according to a release, were realized through a variety of measures:

  • Increasing class size guidelines by one student in K-12 classes and a reduction of 122.7 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions, expected to be realized through retirements and other vacancies.
  • Reduction of 0.4 FTE staff development teachers in middle and high schools.
  • Eliminating 20 central services positions from all employee groups.
  • Eliminating the Montgomery Virtual Academy.
  • Delaying the expansion of the pre-kindergarten program until, at least, the 2025-2026 school year.

“This budget does not include everything we would like, but what it does include is critically important,” Silvestre said.

The budget includes $147 million more than last year’s, an increase of 4.6% 鈥 but it also reflects a $30 million reduction for a same-services budget from the previous year.

“There are no easy reductions to take,” MCPS Interim Superintendent Monique Felder said. “We recognize that every reduction to the budget has a significant impact.”

‘An extraordinarily difficult budget year’

The 2025 operating budget was designed to maintain the same level of services and operations as the current school year, without introducing new initiatives. It also included moving resources and services from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) grant, which is made up of discontinued federal emergency funding, to the general operating budget.

鈥淲ithout question, this has been an extraordinarily difficult budget year for all of us, with the loss of the Elementary and Secondary Emergency Relief, also known as ESER funding, and increased inflation costs. We requested a funding level for an operating budget that we believe is essential to support the teaching and learning needs of our students in all 211 schools,鈥 Felder said.

Initially, the board said current teachers could face layoffs, but updated retirement and resignation figures showed that could be avoided.

鈥淚 am relieved that it appears the MCPS will not have to do extensive staff furloughs or layoffs,鈥 Council member Will Jawando said in a statement Tuesday. 鈥滺owever, I am deeply concerned that the involuntary transfer of teachers to vacant positions, elimination of the virtual academy, and cuts in programming will result in fewer student supports, fewer programs, and delayed implementation of early childhood education programs.”

“I believe we should have done more to support our students and educators during these challenging times,鈥 he added.
