The closure disrupted the morning commute for thousands who take the parkway

And it took nearly seven hours to reopen all of the lanes after the tractor-trailer overturned around 1:30 a.m.

At first, drivers were stuck in the backup behind the crash, then around 3:30 a.m., traffic was diverted to Maryland Route 202. Around 7:30 a.m., traffic was then diverted to New York Avenue.

Much of the cleanup involved removing the produce that spilled and emptying the truck.

The driver of that tractor-trailer should never have been on the parkway, said U.S. Park Police Sgt. Thomas Twiname.

Commercial vehicles are not allowed on National Park Service roadways, including the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, the Suitland Parkway, the George Washington Memorial Parkway and the Rock Creek Parkway.

“We really need drivers, especially the commercial vehicle drivers and commercial vehicle drivers, that are not maybe familiar with the Washington metropolitan area to know they need to be familiar with their routes. They can’t just trust or follow their GPS because, unfortunately, the GPS a lot of times will put them on the park service roadways, where they’re prohibited,” said Twiname.

The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries, according to Sgt. Adam Zielinski.

Twiname said the driver will be cited for driving a commercial vehicle on the parkway.

MCPS parents urged to learn about fentanyl to reduce overdoses /montgomery-county/2022/12/mcps-parents-urged-to-learn-about-fentanyl-to-reduce-overdoses/ Fri, 16 Dec 2022 13:27:11 +0000 /?p=24325930 Parents with students in Montgomery County Public Schools are being urged to educate themselves about the dangers of drug use, specifically fentanyl, because it’s responsible for more than 70% of all overdoses in the Maryland county.

In a , MCPS Medical Officer Dr. Patricia Kapunan said, “In 2021, over 70% of all overdoses in Montgomery County were fentanyl related including substances laced with fentanyl or substances that look like something else (e.g., Xanax, Adderall, Percocet, or oxycodone) but had fentanyl in them.”

Kapunan said parents can educate themselves about fentanyl, which is 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine. Small amounts of the synthetic opioid can kill someone.

“The type of fentanyl driving overdose deaths is illegally made and sold in the form of powder, pills, liquid, or nasal sprays. Other drug products like marijuana, cocaine, heroin or illegally sold pills thought to be prescription medicine may be laced with illicit fentanyl, without the knowledge of the user,” Kapunan said.

She said parents need to recognize the signs of substance abuse and mental health problems, and should know how to use Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, an emergency medication that works to instantly reduce opioid overdoses.

Children are taking drugs for a number of reasons, Kapunan said. Peer pressure and experimentation can lead further problems with drugs.

“Youth struggling with mental health symptoms, pain, or already using other drugs may be more likely to experiment or have problems related to substance use. With fentanyl, it is important to know that individuals may not even know they are taking it, as it is often incorporated into other substances,” she said.

Drugs sold illegally, such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin or illegally sold pills believed to be prescription medicines, may be laced with fentanyl. Traffickers may use fentanyl as way to increase a drug’s potency, and then promote turn around and promote that drug through social media.

Traditional snow days or virtual learning: What will FCPS do this year? /fairfax-county/2022/12/traditional-snow-days-or-virtual-learning-what-will-fcps-do-this-year/ Thu, 01 Dec 2022 13:12:03 +0000 /?p=24278180 Kids, get the sleds ready. The first five inclement weather days for Fairfax County Public Schools this school year will be traditional snow days.

Virginia’s largest school system said weather procedures will stay the same as last year.

After the district uses those five days, future snow days may be with live instruction.

Fairfax County spans 400 square miles, and the school system tries to make decisions the night before a possible snow day, but that can’t always happen when conditions change.

If conditions change overnight, the school superintendent usually makes a decision by 4:30 a.m.

Hyattsville chief credits mom, officers with getting rifle away from sleeping teen /prince-georges-county/2022/11/hyattsville-chief-credits-mom-officers-with-getting-rifle-away-from-sleeping-teen/ Wed, 30 Nov 2022 13:22:30 +0000 /?p=24274022 Hyattsville Police Chief Jarod J. Towers credits a mother for trusting his department and officers for successfully retrieving an assault rifle from a sleeping teen.

The mother of the 15-year-old boy called police to the family’s home, in the 3500 block of Madison Place, around 8 p.m. Sunday.

Towers said that when officers arrived at the scene, they found the teen asleep in his room. With the boy was a loaded short-barreled AR-15-style rifle. A said the rifle was loaded with a 30-round P-Mag that contained two .223/.556 rounds.

“I’m extremely grateful for the mother, for trusting us,” Towers said.

“We in Hyattsville believe absolutely in community policing, and our relationships with the community have afforded us the opportunity to get involved in this situation, much sooner than elsewhere and potentially prevent any type of situation from that could happen in the future.”

Towers said the officers did what they are trained to do. After they cleared the home, he said, “They went in quietly and tactfully and removed the weapon without disturbing the 15-year-old when he was sleeping, without waking him up and potentially escalating the situation.”

The chief said officers were familiar with the teen, who faces charges of being under the age of 21 while in possession of a firearm, and altering the gun鈥檚 serial number.

鈥淲e have been in touch with this young man and his family in the past, and in each instance, we have done everything in our power to encourage him to make better choices,” Towers said.

“You know, 20 years ago, a police department may have barged into the room pointing guns and escalating a situation, ultimately, resulting in a shooting or death that, you know, could have potentially been something that years ago would have just been chalked up as immediately justified. Officers showed extreme caution and patience and de-escalation tactics in resolving the situation.”

I am writing to provide an update to the various community safety alerts the University has issued over the last several hours.

Around 10:30 p.m. last night, there was a shooting on Grounds. One of our students, Christopher Darnell Jones, Jr., is suspected to have committed the shooting. The suspect remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. Multiple law enforcement agencies are coordinating to find and apprehend him. He was last seen wearing a burgundy jacket, blue jeans, and red shoes, and he may be driving a black SUV with VA license plate number TWX3580. First and foremost, please continue to follow the guidance you receive though the UVA alert system, which is currently to shelter in place.

As of this writing, I am heartbroken to report that the shooting has resulted in three fatalities; two additional victims were injured and are receiving medical care. We are working closely with the families of the victims, and we will share additional detail as soon as we are able. Our University Police Department has joined forces with other law enforcement agencies to apprehend the suspect, and we will keep our community apprised of developments as the situation evolves.

This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia. This is a traumatic incident for everyone in our community, and we have cancelled classes for today (Monday, Nov. 14). At this point only designated essential employees should report to work on Monday (all remote employees should continue to work remotely). If you are unsure of your status, please contact your supervisor.

We will continue to provide updates as the situation unfolds. Please know we have support available if you need it. Students may call Counseling and Psychological Services at 434-243-5150, 24 hours a day. Information about CAPS is available on the听Student Health and Wellness website. Montgomery Co. monitoring wastewater for COVID-19 /coronavirus/2022/11/montgomery-co-monitoring-wastewater-for-covid-19/ Tue, 08 Nov 2022 14:19:08 +0000 /?p=24199401 In Maryland’s Montgomery County, wastewater is now being monitored to detect COVID-19, with the aim of getting ahead of any winter surges.

鈥淲astewater surveillance will be a game changer for our efforts to better predict outbreaks and prevent them from happening,鈥 said County Executive Marc Elrich, in a .

“With winter around the corner, we want to be prepared if there is another surge in COVID-19 cases and this surveillance system helps us do that.”

The county first announced plans for the surveillance in March.

The county is collecting water samples twice a week at five sites and sending them to the University of Maryland for analysis. The data then goes to the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services.

The sites are at the following locations:

  1. Reddy Branch – 2611 Brighton Dam Road, Brookville, Md. 20833
  2. Arcola – 2001 Henderson Ave., Wheaton, Md. 20855
  3. King Farm – 315 Pure Spring Crescent, Rockville, Md. 20850
  4. Hoyles Mill – 15001 Hoyles Mill Road, Boyds, Md. 20841
  5. Wexford – 21225 Seneca Crossing Drive, Germantown, Md. 20876

People who have COVID-19 shed the virus in their feces, even if they do not have symptoms.

The information collected from the wastewater is that indicates how many cases of coronavirus the five areas have per 100,000 people.

The data dashboard is updated weekly.

Similar efforts are underway to monitor wastewater in D.C. and Virginia.

Infamous red panda Rusty dies in Colorado /animals-pets/2022/10/infamous-red-panda-rusty-dies-in-colorado/ /animals-pets/2022/10/infamous-red-panda-rusty-dies-in-colorado/#respond Thu, 20 Oct 2022 15:58:02 +0000 /?p=24144781 Rusty, the infamous red panda that in 2013 escaped the only to be found in a tree in D.C.’s Adams Morgan neighborhood, has died at a Colorado zoo.

National Zoo spokeswoman Pamela Baker-Masson confirmed Rusty’s death to 海角精品黑料. Rusty was 10.

The Pueblo Zoo said in a Facebook post: “We are sad to report the unexpected passing of Rusty, the red panda.”

Rusty died Oct. 14, a spokeswoman for the Pueblo Zoo said. The zoo hasn’t yet received results of a necropsy.

While at the Pueblo Zoo, Rusty became a dad to twins, Mogwai and Momo, the zoo said.

The Colorado zoo updated its Facebook page to feature Rusty. The zoo’s area supervisor called Rusty a “great ambassador.”

Rusty’s great escape in D.C. prompted an intense search when Rusty was one and occurred just weeks after Rusty came to the National Zoo in June 2013.

Initially, the escape was a mystery, but then, zoo officials realized that Rusty managed to leave the enclosure with the help of tree canopy in the exhibit. Rain had lowered tree limbs so that there was less space between the trees and edge of the enclosure. Bamboo bent over from the rain created a bridge for Rusty.

A tweet and a phone tip helped animal keepers track Rusty down, but not before causing an uproar on Twitter, even prompting former House Speaker and animal lover Newt Gingrich to tease that he did not steal the panda.

“In response to red panda charges, I have an alibi, Callista and I were feeding our pet elephants all evening ( just a joke) help find panda,” Gingrich tweeted at the time.

Rusty was born in 2012 at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo and then came to the National Zoo in April 2013 before heading to the Pueblo Zoo.

He arrived at the Pueblo Zoo in 2019 as part of the Species Survival Plan.

“The only word that I can use to describe it is senseless — absolutely senseless,” said Prince William County Police Chief Peter Newsham during a Tuesday news conference.

“We’re still trying to nail down the motive and the case.”

Newsham said David N. Maine, 24, of Woodbridge, has been charged. Police said he lived with the victims.

Officials identified the victims as Miguel Duran Flores, 44; Kelly Sotelo, 42, his wife; Karrie Ayline Sotelo, 19, their daughter; and Richard Julio Jesus Revollar Corrales, 36, a renter who lived in the basement.

Newsham said there was an argument in the home in the 5200 block of Mansfield Court. Maine called 911 after the 4:30 p.m. shooting. He was found on foot, not far from the home.

“We believe the weapon that was used in this particular case was discarded in the home, and it was recovered,” Newsham said.

The police said it’s been determined that three of the four victims died of gunshot wounds. An autopsy will determine how the fourth person died.

In addition to second-degree murder, Maine is charged with two counts of use of firearm in the commission of a felony.
