It happened just before 2 p.m. Fire crews went to the 2600 block of S. Walter Reed Drive, where they found a woman under a large tree limb.

In a statement later Thursday, Arlington County said the woman was walking along a path in Lucky Run Park and that the tree limb that hit her was from an 80-foot oak.

The woman was in critical condition when she was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

Authorities are trying to figure out what caused the tree limb to fall on her.

“Safety is our number one priority. The county is investigating further to determine as many details of what happened as possible,” officials said in the statement.

Below is a map of the area where it happened.

Ordering a Lyft or Uber? Price to increase in DC with tax hike to fund Metro /dc/2018/06/ordering-a-lyft-or-uber-price-to-increase-in-dc-with-tax-hike-to-fund-metro/ /dc/2018/06/ordering-a-lyft-or-uber-price-to-increase-in-dc-with-tax-hike-to-fund-metro/#respond Tue, 26 Jun 2018 23:53:04 +0000 /?p=18464207 WASHINGTON 鈥 The cost of your Uber or Lyft ride will soon go up in D.C.

The tax on rides from ride-hailing services such as Lyft and Uber is set to increase to fund Metro after the D.C. Council approved it unanimously Tuesday.

The tax increases from 1 percent to 6 percent, , so that a $20 ride that is currently taxed $0.20 will increase to $1.20.

The District has pledged $178 million in dedicated funding for the transit system.

“That is how we are supporting what Metro needs and what the region needs,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser told NBC Washington.

D.C. Council member Brandon T. Todd, D-Ward 4, expressed concern about the tax increase at a legislative meeting Tuesday. While he was happy that D.C. has established a dedicated source of funding for Metro, he said he was disappointed about how the ride-hailing tax was being handled.

“Inundated by emails from D.C. residents, I’ve looked at ways to address their concerns regarding this vital service. We will move forward today, but this does not close doors on options for the future,” Todd said. He added that he would introduce stand-alone legislation in the coming weeks that will lower the ride-hailing service tax.

The council passed the measure as part of the fiscal 2019 budget.

The tax goes into effect Oct. 1.

Column: What I鈥檒l also be watching during the World Cup /soccer/2018/06/column-what-ill-also-be-watching-during-the-world-cup/ /soccer/2018/06/column-what-ill-also-be-watching-during-the-world-cup/#respond Wed, 13 Jun 2018 20:46:52 +0000 /?p=18417360 WASHINGTON 鈥 Imagine a month of Super Bowls, 31 days of the NBA Finals or a 64-game World Series. That鈥檚 what the World Cup is for a lot of people. That鈥檚 what it feels like to me.

Don鈥檛 expect my full attention between June 14 and July 15. What could really be more important than watching Argentina and Croatia go at it? And don鈥檛 try and tell me I can skip Morocco vs. Iran. I won鈥檛 get another chance (really, another excuse) to watch this much soccer until 2022.

This obsession goes back to the Korea-Japan World Cup in 2002. Sure I was only 9, but that didn鈥檛 keep me from seeing Ronaldo take Oliver Kahn to school with the craziest haircut soccer has ever seen. From that year on, most of my summers have been filled with the grace of World Cups, Copa America and Euros.

And because I grew into soccer just as I was growing as a person, I never put much thought into how the events related to world issues. 鈥淧olitics and sports don鈥檛 mix鈥 is a rule I鈥檇 heard from commentators and read in all the papers.

But as an adult, I just can鈥檛 ignore how closely sports and politics are intertwined, especially when it comes to FIFA events. In 2004, Greece held the European Cup just a decade before their massive economic crisis. In 2007, Venezuela held the Copa America just as Hugo Ch谩vez turned the country鈥檚 democracy into an effective dictatorship. And Brazil鈥檚 2014 World Cup came just a year before the country started the process to impeach President Dilma Rousseff.

It鈥檚 not like FIFA has tried to make things any better: This year鈥檚 World Cup will be held in Russia, a country not only working to undermine democracies across the world, but a leader in human rights violations.

But what about the 2022 World Cup? Well, that one went to Qatar, a country using the blood of Nepalese workers, whose conditions are closer to slavery, to build their stadiums. And FIFA spared no expenses to accommodate the bid, including moving the schedule of soccer leagues all across the world so the tournament can be played in November.

Unsurprisingly, major corruption scandals have followed the past World Cup elections, tainting FIFA and its former president, Sepp Blatter, whose 鈥渂ringing football to the whole world鈥 promise proved just a crafty lie. And Blatter didn鈥檛 fall without putting up a fight: It took FBI investigations, scandalous arrests in Switzerland, double agents and more to ultimately turn football鈥檚 biggest institution into also the most untrusted across the world.

I know that this isn鈥檛 the teams鈥 fault, or the players鈥. But in between the games 鈥 when the news turns to the violence caused by Russian hooligans, or the assaults on LGBTQ rights during the event, both of which are sure to happen 鈥 is that blamelessness enough?

Soccer fans (or any fans, really) go to great lengths to isolate their passion from anything else. But should that include core values such as the belief in peace, democracy and liberty?

After the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Vladimir Putin鈥檚 government began the bloody and messy annexation of Crimea, and many fear the aggressive behavior may repeat after this World Cup. Once Putin has used football鈥檚 crown jewel as a smoke screen for more brutality worldwide, can the world of football honestly tell itself that it played no role, that 鈥渟ports and politics don鈥檛 mix鈥?

I鈥檓 not sure I can.

Sure, I will watch this World Cup, and you can bet I鈥檒l be watching in 2022, and if I鈥檓 lucky enough, I鈥檒l be able to go to a game or two in 2026, when the World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada. But I will also search for ways to clean up my favorite sport, to help those whose lives are critically impacted by FIFA鈥檚 inexcusable ways, and to make sure that the World Cup鈥檚 news coverage also includes the social issues in the host country, whichever it may be.

Around 3:30 p.m., police said they received a call about a crash and聽a man possibly involved聽seen fleeing the scene without his clothes on. The crash and search for the man in a nearby wooded area caused southbound Route 28 to close to traffic between Old Ox Road and Frying Pan Road.

According to police, one of the drivers involved in the crash had gotten out of his car and assaulted another driver involved in the impact. The suspect undressed, police said, and then jumped on a passing vehicle driving on Route 28. The suspect caused damage to that vehicle, got off it and ran from the scene, police said.

The man was later found on Dulles International Airport property and arrested Tuesday night. He was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. There aren’t any other reported injuries, police said.

Police are still working to identify the suspect and charges are pending.

A driver used his cellphone to capture footage of the suspect. Watch the video below.
